Traded in my Raptor 36GB for a Raptor 74GB

Actally I noticed quite a difference when moving from the 36GB to 74GB version, much more than I expected. The 74GB drive feels a lot faster, isn't as loud, and did I mention it fly's like a bat straight out of hell?

You lucky dogs. 🙂 One day I'll upgrade when my 36GB gets too cramped. That might be soon, judging by the size of UT2k4. :Q

I just got a raptor from that deal should be here next week. Glad you reported that deal!!!
Current HD is WD 120 8MB, new drive should be something like twice as fast.

Does anyone have experience with the speed of these things Raided together in Raid 0? I would love to get another drive and that price is ultra tempting, but just don't know if the speed increase would be justifiable enough to spring $199 for another one.

I good guess would be that raid0 of two drives would be about 1.5 times as fast as one drive.
I'm just gonna buy one. If you have the money and the desire, do it. It least it's a lot cheaper than
an expensive SCSI setup, and performs as well.

While is may be cheaper, it performs nowhere near what SCSI can.

Those results are from a Mylex A600 with just 64MB cache purchased for $250 and change on ebay.

Cheers!

:Q Is that Mylex a 64-bit PCI card? For grins n'giggles, I'd love to get my hands on a 32-bit compatible SCSI RAID card. 😀

Its the controller. What he neglected to mention was that in addition to that you need about $1000 for of four drives to get those numbers. (that is a Mylex AcceleRAID 600 U320 PCI-X RAID w/64Mb
64-Bit 133Mhz PCI-X, Dual U320, 64Mb DDR ECC )

shuttleteam, how many drives, and in what config, and on what motherboard did you use to get those numbers ?

Edit: my 32 bit Adaptec 2100s is due tomorrow to run my four 10k scsi drives

Thanks for adding that info, Mark. I guess not all PCI-X cards are backwards-compatible, huh? My LSIU160 is a PCI-X card and works fine in my 32-bit slot. 😕

This is a 133MHz PCI-X card and fits in a 64bit slot ONLY. It is not notched to fit in legacy 32bit PCI slots. You would never want to do this anyway!

That benchmark was obtained with four MAS 15K disks in RAID0. The reads were running in the cache hence the stratospheric scores. The system is insanely fast. Comparing this to a Raptor RAID0 setup is like comparing an Enzo to a Mustang GT.

The motherboard is a SuperMicro X5DAE. The card was running at 133MHz for the test.

I think this silly fast responsiveness would be realised with a single drive due to the card's processor. I have an Intel SRCU42X coming tomorrow for testing. This puppy can take up to 1GB DDR cache! That ought to be interesting. I think I'll hitch four MAS' on each channel for this flight.

Cheers!

I noticed a speed increase. I mainly got it because 36GB is just too small for me. The reduced noise and higher performance is icing on the cake for me.

The newer Raptors don't have the buzzing, whine that the originals had.

Of course, none of my 15k screamers whine but you can tell when they are busy with seeking which doesn't bother me at all.

Cheers!

I just bought 74GB Raptor it should be here monday im so excited!!! Trading up from the ole work horse in my sig 😀
