Traded in my iPAQ PocketPC for a Jornada 567, excellent device :)

NFS4

No Lifer
Dell had a sweet deal on the Jornada 567 ($539 - 10% - $25 w/free shipping). So I quickly sold my iPAQ + Silver Slider + Sport Case + Sync-N-Charge Cable.

The Jornada is a much sweet device than my 3600/3700 series iPAQ.

It comes pre-installed with PocketPC 2002
16-bit color screen (iPAQ is 12-bit)
64MB RAM (my iPAQ had 32MB)
8.8MB FileStore area (part of Flash RAM set aside to store anything you want)
Lighter than the iPAQ
Flip cover folds down to cover the screen when not in use (also removeable).
Integrated CF Type-I slot (not friggen sleeves to use)
Removeable battery (with optional extended battery and battery with MMC/SD memory slot)

you you you have forsaken us!!!!

looks way better than the ipaq though, only problem I see.. or dont see is the screen.. it doesnt seem to be nearly as good.

Pictures don't do the screen justice. The screen isn't as bright as the iPAQ's (no PDA's screen is as bright as the iPAQ's😉). The thing is, I NEVER used my iPAQ at any brightness greater than "low" so this screen is just fine for me. As for viewing pictures, it is MUCH better on the Jornada. There are 65,000+ colors on the Jornada vs 4,096 for the iPAQ. No more ugly banding of images.

The BIGGEST plus with the Jornada is the battery life. This thing is rated at 14 hours (and it is removable, and also has a backup battery as well). I used it for about 1 and half hours today with the backlight at about 25% and the battery was still at 100%

sweet, I want.. but .. I dont realy need one, my ipaq will last me for 2-3 years or so.

wouldnt mind havinga better one though😉

what would you think a pda will be like after 2-3 years??

256MB RAM
.13 micron 1 GHz Intel X-Scale processor
Onboard graphics acceleration (PowerVR is dabbling in that now for PDA applications)
20 hour+ battery life
Better LCD screens (indoor brightness and clarity of the Casio E-1xx series LCD sceens, w/ the outdoor visibility of reflective LCD's used in the current PocketPC 2002 devices).
Integrated networking (802.11a, 802.11g???...Bluetooth is already integrated into the iPAQ 3870).
Smaller size and even lighter weight

not bad not bad 😉
faster than my current computer.

pda's are the future, after a few years pda's is what people will buy and "workstations" will only be used for that, work.

Faster in the MHz since, but not in total processing power 😉 I can't live w/o my PDA though. There was a 3-day break between the time I shipped my iPAQ off to its new owner and when I got my 567. It was the first day in 3+ years that I had no PDA for daily use. I was lost 🙂

You just *had* to post this, didn't you, now I'll probably spend $490 I don't have and buy one too 😀

The big question remains unasked. Dust?

I haven't heard much on x-scale release dates, can you point me to a couple articles NFS4?

Oh, I saw pc magazine had reviewed that new toshiba pocketpc. Gave it an editors choice award, no mention of low battery life. My subscription lapsed (and I didn't realize it until today), so I didn't see the full review, just the one on the website. Are they really having super short battery life, or was that just with the review units people got?

my dads got one of those jornadas, not sure on the model #, but its pretty neat, first pda ive played with since the first palms years ago...color, sound, movies..solitare 🙂

The Toshiba forums over at Brighthand show that users are getting between 4 - 5 hours on a single charge. Reviews from Brighthand and PocketNow confirm this. However, PocketNow received a new e570 recently and updated their review. They ended up getting 7.5 hours after discharging the battery fully about 5 times. Still almost half as much as the Jornada though, and it is not replaceable. Users HAVE NOT been able to reproduce those numbers though, so maybe PocketNow got a "cooked" unit from Toshiba since he bashed it so bad in their original article.

Also, NO dust in my 567.

As for X-Scale, you can read up on these articles:

<< PocketPC a.k.a. PocketPorn. we all know it's real purpose >>

For Kami, it would simply be Pocket LOTR 😉

BUAHAHAHAHAHA😀

Hey now, I bet I could fit all the eBooks on there 😉
Probably all the trailers too eh 😀 Could you play quicktimes in there or is limited to windows media?

Thanks NFS4. I hope Dell is out of stock tomorrow afternoon when I get up, otherwise one of those 567's will be on its way to me :Q.

There is no Quicktime player for PocketPC's, however; I simply use TPMGEnc to convert quicktime movies to MPG's or DIVX AVI's.

But PocketPC's can playback MPG, AVI, WMV, ASF, WMF, ASX, all forms of microsoft streaming video/audio media, MP3, WMA, and WAV.

Hmm, nice. What's the resolution in pixels? I guess you'd just toss 320x240 vids on there...does it have enough processing power to play back 30fps movies smoothly?
TPMGEnc rules...i converted all my quicktime lotr stuff to mpeg and put it on a VCD 😀

The 206MHz Intel StrongARM has MORE THAN ENOUGH oomf to playback movies full screen at 25 - 30FPS. I do this all the time (Rip my DVD's down to PockePC rez's and stick them on my 256MB CompactFlash card).

But PocketPC's can handle resolutions from 240x320 on up to 1600x1200 with NYDITOT. Resolutions of 360x480, 480x640, and 800x600 are more reasonable though. For rez's larger than 240x320/320x340 Landscape, there is a zoom mode to zoom in on any portion of the screen if you choose to do so.

<< does it have an optional PCMCIA sleve? Compact Flash 802.11b wireless cards are expensive... >>

Yes, there is an optional PCMCIA sleeve. I saw a CompactFlash 802.11b wireless card over at Dell.com for $90 after discounts.

Grr... I want one but it doesn't seem to be compatible with the Anywhere Map pilot GPS software. It works with the iPAQ and a Cassio, but not Jornada apparently. :|

It should work, if the software is ARM compatible with iPAQ, it should work with the Jornada.

Yeah, but the GPS plugs into the port on the bottom of the iPAQ. It won't work with the 3800 series iPAQ either because of this.

Oh, you said software so I was thinking that way. Well if they made a GPS that uses a CompactFlash slot, then you'd be set.

🙁 mine broke on the first day of break and Compaq still has it, would they care that I have a "special" version of PPC2002 installed on it?

HAHA, you had the "special" copy *HINT* *HINT*😉 You should have flashed it back to PocketPC2000 before sending it off 😀
