Trade in your old Playstation 2 and 3 Games for a new XBox

Saw this at Electronics Boutique tonight.

Current promotion:

Trade in a Playstation 2 and 3 Games and you will receive an XBox for free.

Exclusions apply to the three games. Mainly older sports games are excluded.

Umm...they want you to trade in a $200 system and $150 in games for a $200 system? Seems a little steep.

Or a system you are tired of playing and three games.

ohoh, do microsoft want to get more console gaming market share

It's a marketing program being run by EB, not Microsoft genius. If it was being run by MS they'd be doing it themselves. Can't you use at least half of your Sony fanboy brain and figure that out?

Geez, lighten up a little bit.

Lol, looks like MS wants to hog up all the PS2 games for themselves. BTW, ragingbitch seriously is a bitch.

Actually, I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if MS paid EB to run this promotion. Because Microsoft doesn't sell XBoxes directly to consumers, they go through a mass retailer like EB with 1000+ stores. It's cheaper and easier for them to outsource the work.

Looks like Microsoft has brainwashed yet another..

I'm considering this. I bought a PS2 soon after it dropped to $199, but I haven't used it much. I might try Xbox instead. Actually I would trade in for a Gamecube.

OK, two things.

I have both systems, and like the both, so dont cry foul

A. NEITHER system is losing (in America). They are BOTH good, selling systems.
B. If I had a PS2 since 1999 or whenever it came out, I MIGHT want to trade it after three years of use. Plus, games can be found for 9.99 now almost anywhere.
C. Microsoft has so much money they don't need to worry about market share. Sony, on the other hand, is lacking in this department.
D. Almost EVERYONE who only owns one system is quite brainwashed. Don't slam microsoft.

Trade in an older ps2 and 3 semi old games and get a new xbox plus the 2 semi new games it comes with. I think that is a good deal. Many people love their ps2 as do those who love their xbox. I think ps2 is a good system, I just prefer xbox, especially due to it's xbox live (which I am a beta member of). For those of you not in the know, xbox live with transform the console gaming platform. Forget about gamecube when it comes to online play. PS2 has some, but are making a mistake by leaving it up to the game companies to provide the support. Xbox live is where it's at. There are supposedly also some other promo deals for EB, such as trade in 2 xbox, gc, or ps2 games (non excluded) and get a new game for $10. But as with any eb deal, YMMV.

But slamming Microsoft is such fun, everyone hates the big bad bully...

Actually, I think your second point is the real winner here. I had to have my (launch) ps2 "repaired" to fix glitches when playing dvds. It works fine now, but if you had one with some problems but was still functional, you could get an xbox for it. Considering the cost of repair of consoles is nearly the replacement cost, this could be a good deal for some. Instead of spending $200 for a new PS2 to replace your old one, trade it in for an xbox. You can trade the xbox for a new PS2 or buy an new PS2 and have both systems (would be my choice 🙂 ).

I do have to disagree with the 3rd point though. MS has tons of money to invest in the console market but they will want a return on that investment. If they end up 3rd in the market and can't grab a desireable segment, they won't throw money away for 5 more years just so you can play games. I do think they will get some of the 'mature' gamer market and maybe a lot of the online. We'll see what happens. At the very least the competition from MS will drive Sony and Nintendo to do more for gamers, a very good thing.

Do you have any details on this at all?

What makes you say that? Microsoft has been in similar situations before and has NEVER backed down. They have **40 BILLION** dollars in the bank, and they clearly see XBOX as a strategic element to their portfolio...Besides, the XBOX isn't exactly failing...they just pulled ahead of Gamecube in Europe, for example. They will never erode the marketshare of PS2, but with new consoles years off, I for one decided not to buy into old technology and got an XBOX instead--and yes, I've been happy with it. Look at MSN, IE, etc---similar situations that MS hasn't backed down on...

I asked about that deal last night. That promo ended last week according to the guy at the store.

Umm... not.

My playstation 2 rocks, and so do my games actually.
If I wanted an X-Box I would just pony up the $200 bucks
w/ the 50 rebate. (search for xbox).

Doesnt sound like a deal at all to me.

What about Microsoft and their failed set-top boxes?

They made huge measures with this and the cable industry, only to eat that investment in the end. Could it happen with Xbox, yes? Is it probable?, not for the time being. I do believe the Xbox has the opportunity to survive, however it is far from a sure thing.

Xbox Live will not be the end all, be all. I was chosen as a beta tester but gave it away due to lack of interest. Online gaming for PCs is one thing, but for consoles - it is still too early. Considering that in order to use XBL you must have broadband, that elimates a large portion of current Xbox owners. Convincing casual gamers to fork out money for broadband plus a membership fee for Live will be a tough sell. And before the "It's only $49.99 for the first year" argument begins - what about after that? Most signs are pointing to around $9.95/month. That's $120/year, about the same price a system will cost at that time.

$50 for broadband, $10 for online gaming - where will it end? Microsoft may have the more-designed plan, but at least PS2 will allow dial-up and free online play through 1st party games. Heck, for all we know, Nintendo realizes the lack of "profitable" interest from online gaming and will come out on top. You never know.
