Trade a 6800 GT for a X800XT??

Hmm should I do this? My GT has been great so I certinaly have no complaints. But I ONLY play CSS which would give me a few FPS boost as ATI hardware runs this better anyways. I will also be playing BF2 and the BF series has been known to play better on ATI hardware as well.

I also want to do the trade just so I can mess around with the other side for a little bit. I like ATI and Nvidia equally I just am not sure if it will be worth it.

I also plan to upgrade to the next gen cards so SM3.0 is of no issue. When they do come out I will probably just sell which ever card I have and either get a PCI-Express setup or AGP if they even make them.

Which would you do? Also this would be a even swap. My 6800GT + NV Silencer 5 for his X800XT w/VIVO + stock cooling.

Benefit of X800XT: No crappy video playback. I hate my GT for that reason alone: I have an A64, so playing any kind of video & then doing anything minute in the background causes the video to skip. Its a real bitch.

Otherwise, go for it. At least you know you won't get a worse card out of the deal and you'll get to experience a new piece of hardware.

I thought that the 6800GT is supposed to have better video capabilities because of the Purevideo thingie?

EDIT: Even with crippled video processor shouldn't the remaining working features at least help a bit in video playback?

lol then Nvidia just pwned themselves for touting a feature that doesn't work!

it's only broken on the 6800 AGP, and no accel on the PCI-e NV45. My NV41 is mpeg2-accelerated so far. regardless, get the XT.

XT all the way.

The XT is faster than the Ultra so it will be faster than the GT for sure.

yup. especially in half-life 2 (or its engine-based brethren) like he said he played.

There was an entire thread about this last summer/fall. Half were disappointed in the false advertising and the other half defended it. It was a mess.

Id be interested in seeing how you like the x800xt, do the trade.

I voted ATI but I'm really quite partial. I tried 2 NV40 cards and both times I returned/sold them and went with an ATI solution.

1. BFG 6800 OC. I returned out of anger at NVidia for lying about Purevideo. I gave them several weeks to release a driver that fixed it. Purevideo is still broken on NV40 cards.

2. eVGA 6800GT. I sold it as FW wouldn't work on my system with this card installed. Interestingly, the 6800OC allowed FW and both of the X800 cards I've had did as well.

Gaming is great on the X800XL I bought last week. It even overclocks which is an added bonus.

You do know that FW's are like 1% if that on ur performance?

That's not the point at all. FW is a mature feature not some new fad that has hit or miss support. The fact that the card didn't work with it on meant that I was not getting what I expected to get. So I sold it.

As I said, the 6800 OC and both X800 cards work with it on just fine. And it was my personal preference to do so, I have historically been very anal about stuff like this. I returned the 6800 OC as Purevideo was broken on it. 🙂

Fast writes work fine on my card as long as its core is 420 or below. I don't notice any perfomance gains with it though.

I will say that it didnt like fast writes with the original BIOS it came with. I found a later BIOS for PNY GT's over on nvnews.net and flashed that and its been fine ever since.

Interesting. Maybe the BIOS on the GT I had was immature also.

Probably. I know there was a eVGA BIOS out there that also fixed fast write problems for most folks.

don't go with the ati, ive owned both and the 6800gt is better all around especially if your a gamer. only game the x800xt is slightly better at is hl2. the 6800gt is much better for splinter cell and farcry

I would swap them since the only games you play do run better on the x800xt.

Also since you're upgrading to the next gen cards having sm3 or not now really doesn't matter.

i wouldnt trade.....many people say that, overall, the 6800's actually give a better more rounded gameplay in HL2 and CSS. yes the x800xt will be faster in places, but its FPS fluctuate a whole lot more

ive used both my 6800GT, and a X800XT PE (me n a friend swapped for a week) noticed little to no difference in speed in any games to be honest....(my 6800GT is overclocked) and he was pleasantly suprised by the 6800gt

on top of that, i just plain prefered nvidia's drivers, the way theyre set out, the features they have, and the ease of use. im not a fan of the way ATI's driver panel is a mess of tabs. nvidia drivers load much quicker (for me anyway), they have digital vibrance control which i like and use.

thats just my opinion though, both are great cards, both are very fast, to be honest your in a WIN - WIN situation

that got very ugly very fast that one

The X800 Pro already performs better then the 6800 Ultra on CSS, nevermind the GT. I would trade. And the X800 XT is better then the 6800 Ultra too.
