You're saying being gay isn't a choice? How is it not a choice? Anything in life is a choice. Being straight is a choice. I choose boobies. Gays choose penor.

I'd choose to be gay if I could. I get the impression I'd get a lot more head. But another guy on the end of my wiener? Gross gross gross.

It is at least part of the equation.

There is most definitely a genetic component, that has been scientifically suggested. And I will completely agree that there is a nurture compenent as well. There also seems to be environmental factors that play in as well (exposure to lower levels of testosterone in the womb for instance). All of which contribute. Personality takes a play as well. I'm sure there is also a certain degree of chance and opportunity that also comes into play. I also don't look at it like it is an on/off switch or a line on the sand. It is a very complex distribution that can not be easily categorized.

But, finally, you can not dismiss that it comes down to what the "self" chooses to actually pursue.

Personally, I feel addiction also plays out similarly. A combination of everything that encompasses what we as humans agree to be "us" and a choice we then choose to follow.

Disclaimer: I should state at this point (because I don't want to be called some sort of "homophobe") that I utterly find nothing wrong with homosexual lifestyles and completely believe that they should be afforded all the rights and privileges and so forth that any other person has. I don't feel that it is something to be "cured" or corrected and that any person makes a "wrong" choice when they do such.

Exactly. Everything in life comes down to a choice. Just like people who are genetically prone to gain weight. That may be true, but ultimately they make a choice to shove another cupcake down their gullet.

Just because you are genetically prone to something doesn't mean there is no choice involved. I'm not saying being gay is bad.

I can sum it up pretty cleanly in one sentence. I would do absolutely anything to not be gay. Anything. But it doesn't work like that. I have tried basically everything I can think of in the past to try to ignore, hide or otherwise not acknowledge it and it's not possible. Nothing happened to me as a kid trauma wise, I had a pretty normal upbringing, albeit in a very racist and anti-gay environment.

If people actually truly believe that I am making a choice to have a fucked up and impossible life, I just don't have words for that. No one wants this. It shouldn't be that way, but it is... and based on some of the comments in this thread, it's not hard to see why people don't want this.

However it gets determined I don't know and likely wont, but I can tell you with every fiber of my being that it is not a choice that I am making. It is just the way it is.

Yea, this is what he does...he says really outlandish shit. Just look up some of his YouTube interviews, especially the one of him on a local news station at like 7 am possibly still drunk. He tells the white lady anchor he's gonna impregnate her and a bunch of other people....and tells her its "forbidden love"...proceeds to take his shirt off while laying on the desk and goes "this is my impression of a pregnant woman giving birth" and sticks his stomach in and out. He's nuts.

I'm not even shocked that he said any of this...he says the craziest shit I've ever heard in my life. Just watch all his interviews on YouTube, etc...

Here's the interview I was referencing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXz16nqmLPc

A few more gems:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOhKrL5DB1Y

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-april-15-2010/tracy-morgan

http://video.teamcoco.com/video/conan.jsp?oid=248028

And one of my favorites where he is talking about the Mel Gibson tapes and says, "Calling women b-tches and using the N-word. That ain't nothing but hip-hop...He stole that concept from Lil' Wayne." - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/15/tracy-morgan-weighs-in-on_n_647231.html

I cant watch your links at work, but if the Stewart and Conan ones are the ones that I was referring to and thinking of, they are literally begging for mercy. He's the one that makes the people that make us laugh, laugh.

I think you're ignoring the bulk of my post here, and the message I am trying to make, but fine, I'll say 'most' that I know and talk to do not want to be.

is Tracey being black a choice? Gay people love to carry on about how them and black people are one in the same because both are discriminated against. I've worked with gay people I had no idea were gay until they told me. I've never worked with a black person who had to tell me they were black though.

Sure, I guess. He could pull a Michael Jackson if he really hated it that much. I think he kind of likes being black though.

I'd like to watch you have a discussion with one of the parents of a kid that offed themselves due to non-stop bullying.
I actually have interacted with a parent of a kid who attempted suicide due to bullying. He is alive but unfortunately just barely above what is considered a vegetative state.

It is a horrible shame. And honestly I do not have a good answer for how to fix something like that.

What I do think is that us "campaigning against bullying" is doing jack fucking shit. It ends up feeding into zero tolerance policies and you end up with kids getting criminal charges and other nonsense. While other kids are still getting picked on.

The bullying isn't going to magically stop. Fuck our society actually encourages and promotes it when we become adults. The bullies end up ruling the world.
The vast majority of us remain to be the peons. It is an bullshit but it is life. Deal with it.

Like I said, it is a horrible situation that some of these kids get into. We need to find ways to help them reach out. Or ways to help them under stand that eventually shit does get (somewhat) better.

I think recently that there was a thread about George Takei and some program to help young homosexuals in dealing with shit where the focus was saying something along the lines of "yeah, your parents, friends, and small backwards town might be fucktards, but screw them, it can and does get better".

That is a message I can get behind.

If you cannot see the similarities as far as civil rights and the way gay people are still treated in this country then I am kind of dumbfounded. Just because it's not as obvious doesn't mean it doesn't feel or hurt the same.

I'd argue that it doesn't get better as much as it just becomes different. Yeah the outright bullying stops but the alienation and discrimination just evolves along with you as you age. I love the message they're putting out there but I don't really agree with better... just different. I guess that's subjective.

I think I am trying to say this in a rhetorical philosophical way.

I don't mean to call you out and don't mean to offend you by this, but why would you not want to be gay? If that is who you are why wouldn't you want to be you? If it isn't you then why not be you?

Believe me I understand that I often wish I wasn't me. Probably more time than I can say I am comfortable being me.
I think that desire to be something else might just be one of those shitty parts of the human condition.

And I do not mean to downplay any struggle you might have living as with who you are. I completely understand that our fucked up backwards society loves to make it as difficult as possible for anyone to be who they are, especially homosexuals.

Personally, I believe that everyone at some time, probably all the time, regrets and hates who they are.

"You have so much to live for. All that pain and anguish you're experiencing now? Just wait until you get a little older, it gets different."

Ya, I think if I read that on the side of a bus I'd jump in front of it.

I don't think he has a problem with being gay as much as he has a problem with being gay in a homophobic, intolerant society.

I think to clarify a little better:

A lot of people end up "choosing" to (1)be who they are, (2)to hide who they are, or (3) to strive to be something else. That is part of the "choice" I was referring to... and that is a "choice". Though the choice you end up making is also probably heavily influenced by who "your self is".

This.

I have no issue with what I am. I accept it, I am fine with it.. I say I don't want to be gay because of the society I have to live in. I want to be able to visit my partner if they're dying in a hospital bed somewhere. I want the same rights and freedoms that every other straight American is afforded. I simply cannot see a compelling reason why there's an asterix on the word freedom in this country.

This is what I was saying.

I am genetically a very skinny person. I have chosen to overcome my genetics and stuff myself to the point of wanting to puke 4 times a day in order to gain weight, but that just plain sucks. So I have chosen to just accept who I am and be skinny as a pole.

And I completely agree with him. That does blow. But I don't see that changing any time soon.

The ability to survive the bullshit that we have to deal with in life is a huge over trying to undertake the Sisyphean task of changing society.

I think in there kind of lays my point. And what I would have wanted to say to some kid before he did something stupid.

They are the ones who are fucked up. You are just being you. Yeah it sucks. Most of what there is sucks. But it can be better. It probably won't, but it can. And maybe at some point you will have some happiness. Which is much better than never having any.

Kinda sappy and optimistic and bullshitty. But I think the vast majority of people deep down inside keep going on with life merely on something like that.
