Trackpad problem, possibly related to new mouse

I've been using a microsoft wireless mouse 5000 with no problems for about a week now, but for some reason my trackpad isn't scrolling anymore. I went into the control panel and looked at all the mouse stuff and not only is scrolling enabled but all the hardware stuff checks out. The scroll zones are all enabled and shown to be working in the control panel stuff. What's even weirder is that the scroll wheel on the wireless mouse works, but the trackpad never scrolls even when the external isn't plugged in. This is on an HP dv5, and I don't think any drivers or anything have been updated recently.

In many laptops, the touchpad is disabled or limited if a mouse is connected. Since yours doesn't work right when the mouse is not connected, my suspicion is that you installed some mouseware that overrides the touchpad..

Still don't know what caused the problem, but I did a system restore to a few days ago (when AVG updated last) and it's working again. All the new options that were added in the control panel when I installed the mouse are still there, so I don't think any overriding mouseware was removed. Who knows, but it works.
