Tracking software of an x-wife on her puter ?

A friend of mind is going through a major, nasty divorce and since he left, she feels like he knows exactly what’s going with her life and wants to know if there is a program to run to check to see if there is any such thing on her computer.

She has changed her passwords several times weekly, but somehow he still knows what’s going on with her correspondence through her e-mail. He is a creep, a con-man, and he’s up to something. I just want to be able to help her. Thanks you!

Honestly, just back up her data, wipe the computer and reload Windows so you know it's clean. Chances are that he's getting information from a mutual friend or she's just being paranoid, but wipe it to be sure.

Format and reinstall is the only way to be sure

Make sure there are no hardware keyloggers (devices between the keyboard and the USB or PS/2 port, which is unlikely).

If format / reinstall is not an option, I would do the standard "procedure"

1. Disable System Restore
2. Reboot into SafeMode with Networking
3. Run CCleaner
4. Update and run Antivir Personal Edition with deep scanning settings enabled
5. Update and run Superanti-Spyware with deep scanning settings enabled
6. Check a hijackthis log with www.hijackthis.de

* For ultimate security (after she has checked for USB or PS2 key loggers), she should boot from a Linux LiveCD to change her passwords and check her email.

More than likely he is using a stealth keylogger. It doesn't show in the tray or in the Task Manager. The only way to see it is by using a special key combination.

If she absolutely wants to be safe, you could back up her data and then do a system restore. Or go the easy route, and run an Ubuntu Live CD. If you think she wouldn't be able to use Ubuntu, try this distro: http://www.ylmf.org/en/

It's Ubuntu still, but looks and acts exactly like XP.

If I suspected someone was spying on me in this way I think I would try to use it to my advantage. With a little imagination, she could really mess with this guy by feeding him some bogus information as long as he doesn't realize she is on to him.

I can identify with this a bit. I don't know much about computers, and I am being harassed by my ex-hubby's new wife with hundreds of nasty spam emails, you name it. I'm at the end of my rope. It's frustrating because I really don't know where to start!

Get a new email address and don't tell them it, or set up filters on your current address and have the messages automatically deleted.

I think Gmail can be setup up to automatically forward / CC incoming emails in the account management which would be worth checking.

And... this is highly likely to be illegal where she lives. Call the cyber unit in the local cop shop. She can really get back if he is illegally monitoring her.

make sure her email isn't forwarded to him

The easiest way to find out how he is doing it is with wireshark. Unless he is physically accessing the pc then he has to get the information over the internet. With wireshark you can see all the outgoing packets from the pc and where they are going and determine if any of them are not allowed.
