(Just FYI I consider myself pretty comp-savvy, I did already everything I can think of like malware scans, defrag, checking logs and I even did a complete repair install of Win 7 yesterday).
Here is the situation:
Wife has an older notebook, it has some i5 M540 2.5Ghz, 4GB memory, Win7.1. The specs ITSELF are "ok" for what she does with the only exception that the built-in GPU, a mobile AMD HD 5000 is sort-of crappy. It also doesn't have a SSD, just some average 500GBish WDC HD.
But this notebook degraded CONSIDERABLY in performance and is now driving wife and me NUTS. It takes a long time to boot and basically everything is sort-of a PITA, as if the HD would now be very sluggish, but MORE than I would expect from "natural" performance degradation over time.
My question is...how can I, short of doing an entire new install of Win7 or 8.1 track down WHAT causes the performance loss?
I dont see any suspicious services running nor is there anything started with the exception of Kaspersky AV which I have on every computer, always. The laptop is considerably slower than my ancient Core2Quad desktop...which is odd since just from the specs it SHOULD not be that slow...
Gaming etc. seems to be fine, but it's just the entire responsiveness of Windows.
Edit: The repair install probably did a LITTLE but the notebook is still far less snappier than it should be. I would've wanted to do a complete new install but did a repair yesterday just out of curiosity to see whether it fixes things.
