Only people who work for the government fly with our money (taxes). Corporations do not.

All US Air Traffic as of 1510 GMT (10:10 am EST) today.

Skies are pretty crowded! At that time 10 minutes ago, there were 5,208 planes on IFR flight plans under the control of the US ATC system.

Geez. Remind me not to fly again.

Living in Atlanta and seeing the number of planes that fly overhead, I don't doubt that the skies look like that regularly across the US. I just thought this was interesting because it was showing corporate jet traffic leaving Florida the morning after the Super Bowl.

well im not really that surprised. The median salary for people that attend the superbowl is $125K. There must be a ton of corporate executives that fly down for the night and back the next morning, or even right after the game. Also semi-rich people get together and rent out charter planes to fly down in style

This is a slow day! During holidays, I've seen as many as 14,000 aircraft in the air at once. And these are only planes on IFR flight plans, so it doesn't include smaller airplanes just flying around for fun and flight training.

What do you think is up with this one?

Testing perhaps?

EDIT: Just noticed it was diverted from Eppley. I have to wonder, if it was an emergency, why not go to the nearest field, why back to DTW?

I usually monitor this screen just to track my own airline's flights, but I can play with the filters and have it show EVERYTHING. or I can follow any airplane I want, as long as it's in the air. THe planes are color coded to help me identify certain airlines more easily. The red planes you see are FedEx flights.

Yeah, I pulled that flight up on my program and it's actually the 2nd diversion away from Eppley within 13 minutes. I don't know why they diverted... the weather is great there and the runways are in decent shape. No serious NOTAMs. But that one flight, 5879, my guess is it was some sort of emergency. Usually airlines wont test-fly with regular flight numbers; they'll use the airplane's tail number as the flight number. They weren't too far away from their departure point and, considering the nature of the problem, whatever it may have been... all they would need to do is land at the nearest airport, in point of time, at which a safe landing could be made. If the nature of the problem was not severe, they could afford to return to the origin, especially if proceeding to the destination means they'd be at an airport where repairs couldn't be made. But all I can do is just speculate!

The purple planes are Alaska Airlines flights (they are of interest being that I live in Alaska) and the white planes are Boeing 777's from various airlines.
