Marion Jones admitted using steroids before the 2000 Olympics in a recent letter to close family and friends, The Washington Post reported Thursday.

Jones, who won five medals in Sydney, said she took "the clear" for two years, beginning in 1999, and that she got it from former coach Trevor Graham, who told her it was flaxseed oil, the newspaper reported.

"The clear" is a performance-enhancing drug linked to BALCO, the lab at the center of a federal steroids investigation. Until now, Jones had steadfastly denied she ever took any kind of performance-enhancing drugs.

Jones also said she will plead guilty Friday in New York to two counts of lying to federal agents about her drug use and an unrelated financial matter, the Post reported.

"I want to apologize for all of this," the Post reported, quoting a person who received a copy of the letter and read it to the paper. "I am sorry for disappointing you all in so many ways."

The admission could cost Jones the medals from the Sydney Olympics, where she was one of the United States' brightest stars. Though she fell short of her goal of winning five gold medals, she came away with three and two bronzes.

But her career has been tarnished since then by doping allegations. In her letter, Jones said she lied when she was questioned in 2003 by federal agents investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. Jones said she panicked when agents presented her with a sample of "the clear," which she recognized as the substance Graham had given her.

In the letter, Jones said she didn't realize she'd used a performance-enhancing drug until she stopped training with Graham at the end of 2002.

"Red flags should have been raised when he told me not to tell anyone," the Post reported, quoting the letter.

this whole era in sport is tainted, imho. even the best testing regimes can't catch everything (and only idiots will take things that are testable). after this bust last week there is going to be a lot of sh!t hitting some pretty damn big fans.

though, the fact that the french still haven't been able to pin anything on lance armstrong is amazing, considering they are now able to test for probably everything usable back then

They all claim they had no idea they were using steroids. A big fat lie!!

Same thing with Shane Mosley, James Toney, Roy Jones Jr, Tommy Morrison and many others in Boxing circles who claim they took it unknowingly.

Gee, you think?

I don't believe athletes who say they never knew what their coach was giving them. It may have been with a wink and a nod, but I don't think a coach would risk that without the athlete's approval.

"Game of Shadows" detailed her use and aquisition of the clear from Graham. It's just a matter of time before the truth catches up with Barroid and everyone else outted in that book.

At least she has admitted it. BUT it totally robs the 3/4th place guys who could have medaled of their own glory. THAT is what p!sses me off most in these cases. The cheating bast of a winner gets glory and the 2-4th place guys could have had more, now thats sickening.

Chess players are tested by FIDE. Even high levels of caffiene will get you a large fine and lifetime ban.

At whom are you rolling your eyes? The steroids users or those who try to stop them?

Maybe the other people just didn't get enough "flaxseed oil" from their coaches.

She ONLY admitted it after she could no longer deny it and the case closed in on her imo. This isn't out of integrity, she swore slander was made against her for years and threatened litigation. However with the evidence/testimony of others, she's finally forced into a corner to come clean or take a risk of doing more time. She's a lying dirtbag like all the others who cheated and lied about it.

Are you joking or being serious Rastus?

Here teammates are going to be pissed!

Jones may not be the only one affected. The entire 4x400m women's relay team could lose their gold medals as a result.

Fixed. The cheaters will always be one step ahead of the testers. Always.

Props to Jones for coming clean, though. Even if it was delayed and there was external pressure on her honesty is always a good thing no matter when it comes.

With ever new allegation/admission "The Game of Shadows" appears to be that much more believable.

For those that don't know, in game of shadows they claim Jones used steroids, however she was adamately denying it.

It'll be a hard habit to break since she's been doing it for so long now, but I guess she can finally stop with the threats, lies, and lawsuits. Go crawl under a rock Marion, I'm far more disgusted by your methods of defending yourself than by your use of the drugs that everybody else was using.
