tracing an im is it possible?

Recently somebody has been messing with some of my friends on instant messenger and was wondering if anybody knew how i might be able to trace the actual aim account to find out who it is or if there is a way to trace the ip address and work from there? If anybody knows how to do this i would greatly appreciate it.
 
Unless you're directly connected, all AIM messages are routed through AOL's servers. Thus, you can't see the other person's IP address. Why not just block the other person?
 
Well, you can trace Direct Connections. If you have a firewall setup like BlackIce or ZoneAlarm....Or even something like NetTrace you can try to connect to the guy via Direct Connection and log his IP that way. Otherwise, just block the dude. Sounds like juvenile activies, in which case...Just block the dude. However, if it's serious I could see why you'd want to.
