You don't have any kids, do you?
My 8 year old and 13 year old both have cellphones. My wife and I are on a share plan, the 13 year old has her own plan, and the 8 year old has a tracphone (with 19 minutes and 9 days left on it. She just filled me in, thought it was important that I add that here 🙂)
The 8 year old has a special cell phone holder that hangs on her purse. It's there for emergencies, if she misses her Mom, or for any other of a million reasons people have a phone.
It's purposely a tracfone so that when she loses it I can replace it for 20 or 25 bucks. To her credit, she hasn't lost it once and she takes super good care of it. She added the "super good care of it" part. 🙂

Dude, lots of kids have cellphones. There's a small dance school near me, and when they take a break, they go outside to chat and eat... these are like 8-10 yr old girls, and they break out their cellphones.

Sam's Club sells minutes at a slight discount.

And If Iwasin your situation, looking at the Ebay ad - I would give it a shot.

I think I'm gonna go with this.
I googled up a promo code and her old minutes and days roll over.
It's 140 minutes and 60 days for 30 bucks.
9 extra bucks buys me peace of mind and 40 more minutes.
I'm surprised that prices are so even on the minutes. I thought for sure I'd be able to shake out a really sweet deal somewhere.
I'll hit gottadeal before I pull the trigger.
