Trace An E-Mail?

My husband and I got a threatening e-mail. The police are not up to date as far as technology goes (the chief doesn't even know what spam is). We have reason to take the threat seriously. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the source? I JUST want to know where it came from. Nothing else. If we can show the tracking of it to the police, they can do something about it.

Is this kind of thread appropriate? Normally I wouldn't post something like this, but we're sort of at the end of our rope.

I can post the mail if you'd like to see, but it'd need to have all the bad words edited out first.

The "suin" refers to a lawsuit we have pending against these people harrassing us.

I deleted all the bad words, not just the F bombs.

And you don't know where the people you're suing live? You have to ask people on the internet to find them for you?

Unfortunately, you will need to get Yahoo involved. unless Yahoo is willing to reveal the originating IP address you are not going to be able to trace it back to the sender. only back to the yahoo mail server.

I'm not sure what yahoo's policy is though.....

It occurs to me that so long as you have the email on record with the PD and since it states that you cease suing "my family", the sender is likely a member of that family. Granted, it alone is probably not enough to secure anything substantial, but I think it does have some sort of legal impact.

Ironic how the day after we got it though, a glass bottle went sailing through our front door and my husband was cut by flying glass.

If that's the case, then yahoo could give the original IP, then she'd need to go to the ISP, and then could get their address. If they're in mexico it's probably not worth the hassel, plus if they're at an internet cafe there isn't crap you can do anyway.

I'd continue to keep the police involved, get a security system if I felt I needed it, and stay armed, for good measure.

That isn't small-timing at all. I'd seriously get a security system as well as setup a video camera to monitor who's doing this, and also I'd contact the neighbors to see if they can keep an eye out (maybe even host the video camera in their house out of one of their windows).

People who do this sort of sh*t are generally retards, so as long as you can catch them before something bad happens you're good. Goodluck!

Print out a copy with the headers, and get it to your lawyer ASAP. Have him contact their lawyer and demand that the threats stop. If necessary, your lawyer can get a PI on it. It probably won't go that far, though. If it comes right back to them thru their lawyer, you won't hear from them again.

I'd give a copy to your lawyer. Perhaps there is enough information in the email to make it worthwhile for the police to get involved. Law enforcement might be able to get Yahoo to disclose the source IP.

I remember reading last year about a court case where someone got serious jail time for mailing letters to someone they were involved in a court case with, and the letters in that case weren't as detailed as the email you got.

I'd still contact yahoo.
Even if it was from an internet cafe or a friends house, you might be able to narrow it down from there. Hell, they may have been dumb enough to do it from home.

-dump acid on the car 3 times
-burn down the garage
-cut the tranny line while the car was parked BEHIND THE POLICE CHIEF'S HOUSE
-make threatening phone calls
-egg the house (numerous times, they did get caught doing this once and were prosecuted)
-routinely stalk/drive by

i am very curious as to why they're doing this to you. i hope that you get the protection you need and that your lawsuit works out in the end. care to elaborate some more about the situation? probably inappropriate to ask. just curious...
