TR Bolt-through kit may mess up temps?

In this review of a Xigmatek S1283 paired with a Thermalright FX-10 they noticed that the Thermalright bolt-through kit may not work as well with the S1283 as originally thought. The backplate may need 2-3mm filed off the pillars for the S1283 to have good contact with the CPU. Xigmatek's Crossbow backplate doesn't have this problem apparently.

In case you're wondering, the FX-10 knocked off ~10c from the max temp of the S1283. Switching the Xigmatek stock fan for a Yate Loon D12SH-12 also gave a slight improvement.

I read a review some two months ago, can't find it now, where it was saying exactly the opposite. The Xigmatek S1283 was keeping the cpu cooler with the Thermalright bolt-through kit then it did without it.
I don't know who to believe anymore now....🙁

For all I know, both braces are the same and would make an improvement to either cooler.

Filing those posts would have the same effect as the pressure/penny/washer/cardboard mod.....more contact pressure between the HS and CPU.

I think my temps are actually worse since Xigmatek sent me a complimentary back-plate kit.
I ruined the original push-pin mount when removing it, so I guess i'm going to mount my TT back on.

You'd be the perfect guy to check the post height on both braces and see if they're the same.

I hooked up my Tuniq today, but after seeing my temps (CPU - 41c, Core1 - 53c, Core2 - 48c & these are idle...E6300 @ 2.45...350FSB x 7X), I may try that mod w/the Xigmatek.
Tell me what I gotta do!

See how posts from the backplate stick out past the motherboard? The reviewer who tested the S1283 thinks that they stick out too far to work well with the Xigmatek. So you either have to file them down or offset the backplate a couple of MM, so that the posts are sticking out just slightly above the motherboard. I don't think you want the metal bracket completely flush against the board though, unless you use an insulator there too.

OK, Just so everyone is on the same page, how 'bout a link to the cooler and mounting you have?

AFAIK, both the Xigmatek and Thermalright TRUE mounting assemblies are exactly the same configuration for the 775 socket....there's a metal X brace on the top and a larger plastic X brace on the bottom...like this.

If your's isn't the same, are you sure you have the Xigmatek S1283 cooler?

If you take a look at those pics, you'll note too metal brackets with holes in em. Those screw onto either side of the Xig base. Not quite a metal X brace up top.

The only thing I could see us really doing is sticking a piece of cardboard between the X shaped back plate and the motherboard. Or buying the Xig mounting kit.

For whatever reason I can't find a clear pic of the mounting bracket for 775 boards, so that'll just have to do. The push-pin bracket is secured to the base of the heatsink the same way the bolt-thru bracket is. No parts of the bracket actually go over the middle of the heatsink base on the S1283.

Check out the installation animation or even the PDF. No X bracket over the base of this heatstink. 🙂
 
i have the IFX-10 inferno crap.

its worthless

if you use it and you see a difference, its because you messed up on your cooling layout, and your not getting enough airflow though your case.

Its big and bulky, and seriously its crap.

It came with my IFX-14, and im probably gonna loan it to bonzaiduck to play with it.
 
Well, now that we know how my Xigmatek mounts (I got the bolt-thru kit directly from Xigmatek, btw), I think i'll double up a piece of cardboard to put between the motherboard & the bottom brace.
Geez, w/that dang Stacker I got, one would think i'd have good airflow!

You have the Xigmatek bolt-through kit or the TR bolt-through kit? The Xigmatek kit may not need the cardboard. Might still improve temps though. Let us know what happens.
 
I got the kit from Xigmatek. There's 2 braces that screw on either side of the heatsink (no criss-cross on top) & the 4 "spring-loaded" screws that screw into the backplate. It's the same one that SkuLLyRT linked to here.

It does look like the posts don't stick out as much compared to the Thermalright kit:

Right after they first came out they were. I believe they quit that promotion in January.
You can get the backplate kit here for $13.98 (which seems a little high to me, IMHO).

Bumping this, because I'm curious if anyone has actually tried wedging a piece of cardboard between the TR kit and their mobo.

Well, I cut a piece of cardboard using the back plate as a template. I installed the Xigmatek, applying the TIM using the last method from this article.
I swapped out the components from my Stacker 832 & put them in my P182B.
Using a 7X multiplier & a 400FSB in a room w/30C ambient, my temps (at idle) are now as follows (using Everest Ultimate):

CPU: 45C
CPU (Core#1) 56C
CPU (Core#2) 53C
HDD 42C

I don't know if it honestly helped or not since I swapped out cases. I think my HDD temps are higher. I do know that if I re-do it, i'll use a paper hole punch instead of poking a hole where the screws will go through & into the backplate.

I guess without knowing what kind of temps you were seeing in your old case it'd be hard to say whether or not that piece of cardboard helped, but those core temps seem ridiculously high to me for something that is idle. Must be your ambient room temp keeping it up so high.

I actually ordered a couple of new toys from Newegg today, and tossed the Xig bolt-thru kit in with them, so I should have some results next week as to whether or not the shorter pillars really make that big of a difference over the TR bolt-thru kit.
