Hi forum,

Due to a couple of recent thefts from my property I want to extend my WiFi approximately 75 metres to my garage in order to run a security camera and alarm system. It is across a courtyard in clear line of sight but the far end access point will be behind a wall.

I have a TP Archer C2 router in my home and a TP WA801ND access point I can use in the garage.

Will this TP Link Directional 9db Antenna work or will I need something a bit more powerful? Also, do I require of these in both ends or will it be sufficient if I buy one for my router only?

See this thread. That should work fine on just the router, but the placement of the router might need adjustment to account for the length of the attached cable whereas the PicoStation uses Cat5/6 which is easier to extend with a longer cable and/or switch.

Thanks for replying and for the link - interesting topic and the PicoStation looks like an interesting alternative!

And you make a fair point regarding line of sight Jack, but I forgot to mention that I am planning to place the TPLink antenna outside on the roof. Still, the access point will be placed inside - that is true.

Also I should state that I am not expecting blazingly fast results, I think around ~20-25 mbit should be plenty.

Is this realistic with this device or perhaps with the slighty more expensive PicoStation?

It depends on the length of the coax that is used to attach the Antenna to the AP.

2.4GHz coax has a rapid decline and thus is not in used if the length is more that a foot or two.

Processional installations installs outdoor APs outside and feed the unit with a Ethernet/POE cable that does not attenuate the signal.

Thanks a lot for your help. Outdoor AP sounds ideal and based on how my old AP performs in this setup it may become my next purchase. Still, I'm going to try out my existing one first!

Based on your input I'm going to order the PicoStation along with the TP-Link Antenna to see if any of them can get the job done. Better safe than sorry and what ever product I end up not using can always be returned. 🙂
