Looking to ditch the rental fee on your cable modem? Newegg has the TP-Link TC-7610-E for $45 with free shipping. Just use code EMCEJFE54.

For most ISPs, an 8 downlink channels, 4 uplink channels modem will work up to speeds of ~150 mbps, but anything more generally requires a 16x4 modem. Of course, I'd google your ISP and BYOM before purchasing. And depending on your provider, this could pay for itself in as little as 5 months (based on TWC $10/mo rental fee I saw the other day).

Time Warner Cable, 60 bucks for 300Mbps, this modem will not do that you need a 16 down... Eventually, all cable companies will lower costs as they compete for fiber. I got on a deal for 50 bucks for 300Mbps down. I see 300Mbps becoming the new normal and standard. I think an 8X tops out at 150-200Mbps.

I say buy the faster modem now instead of buying this one. A 16X can be had for under 100 bucks when it's on sale. Not saying it's a crap deal, but maybe buying something you'll have to buy again... Maybe look for a faster option.

No, it won't do 16 channels down, but for many providers under 100 mbps, this would be a pretty good value, considering modem rental fees range from $5-$10/mo (and I don't think it's very normal to have > 100 mbps service). It would effectively pay for itself in under 10 months - should you decide to upgrade at a later date, I don't think it would be a big deal to pick up a 16x4 modem at that point.

I know this will attract anger but I have Fios and my speed has been upgraded several times. I have come to the conclusion unless you are doing something peculiar or streaming tons on multiple TVs or have several people in the house anything past 50mb or arguably 25mb is simply not needed.
This modem sounds like a good value for someone who needs it. Fortunately Fios does not charge rental fees, probably has something to do with the fact that you can't buy your own.

Yeah. I just picked up an MB7220 (combo deal with an Archer C9) 8x4 modem to ditch my rental. I had this temporary bonus 110mbps service that recently went back to 50mbps. I haven't seen much of a difference in internet experience and I share my connection with a roommate who is always streaming Netflix. And my modem will pay for itself since RCN was charging $6/mo + tax on it.
