Toyota Won?t Bring Back Supra

What happened with the 3500 or 3000? Or was it 2000 GT they were developing in Germany? The one with the v8?

Press points instead to the Camry Solara, MR2 Spyder roadster and Celica, along with sport-tuned versions of some Toyota trucks, as filling the performance void.

LOL!!! I guess Nissan and Mazda are pretty happy though.

Weird move by Toyota. They need a halo sports car. It's not like they couldn't make money off of the thing...

They're just playing it safe. That's why Toyota makes money but they are not popular with the younger set. They are trying to change that with Scion, although it remains to be seen how successful that will be at bringing in younger buyers on a national scale.

And it's not like they're strapped for cash. They can afford to loose TONS of money. Look at how much money they're throwing at NASCAR's Supertruck series with the Racing Tundra

They have more cash on hand than Ford, GM and Chrysler combined (Nissan and Honda too IIRC). It would do wonders for shaking Toyota's boring, blandmobile image. I'm sorry, but the Corolla XRS and the Scions ain't gonna be able to do that.

Lexus = luxury. Don't think a 2 door sports car would go well there.

For luxury cars, yes - but not necessarily for sports cars. Think Mazda RX-8, Chevy Corvette, Ford GT, Nissan 350Z, etc

I agree that they're throwing money at their $$ making products and unwilling to take risks. That sure sounds like Toyota to me. The XRS and Scions and that POS concept to get consumer $$ out of the youth market. Camry Solara, MR2 Spyder roadster and Celica for the "sporty" market.

I doubt they care very much for the enthusiast market at this point. So much of their money is in mass-market appeal products and that's their cash cow. So they keep on feeding it. There's nobody in charge over there that seems to see performance as a big selling point... there's no Bob Lutz or any visionaries there to really push that kind of agenda. That may be a bad thing in the long run... but then again, it may be better in the long run for their bottom dollar. They already have a good corporate image... but it sure doesn't scream performance.

If they DON'T inject a bit of VIAGRA into the lineup, they're gonna watch their average buying age shoot through the roof and turn into Buick or god forbid...Oldsmobile.

Saying a 2 door sports car won't fit under a luxury label is silly. BMW has the Z4 and 6-series. Mercedes has the SLK and SL.

I agree, the Supra wouldn't make a good Lexus, but that's because the Supra heritage doesn't befit a luxury car, and the last gen Supra was already reamed for being too expensive. Why would Toyota introduce a Lexus GT sports coupe under $40,000? Especially when it might end up competing against the SC430.

It all hinges on price. If its going to be expensive it needs to be on the luxury name to help warrant the big bucks. The Supra likely wouldn't be a big-bucks car.

Surprisingly enough I actually like that Supra from the second link in the first post, reminds me of a cross between a z4 and some other roadsters....

too bad, one of the first cars they build with a personality they decide not to sell

Exactly! Lexus already has a grand tourer in the SC. Why would they want another? Unless they price it well under $40K, in which case it would be better off as a Toyota. The Supra would be a nice performance vehicle in the $28-$35K range competing the GTO, 350Z, and the like.

Your logic is flawed. Neither BMW or Mercedes have "second tier" downmarket brands like Lexus does with Toyota. Toyota is value/performance. Lexus is straight up luxury/customer pampering.

I'd also argue that neither the 6-Series, SLK, or SL are sports cars. There more GT than anything else.

Yeah I like it too, with the exception of the front fascia which I think is fugly. But the car's profile is sweet.
