Being one means constantly fighting for that place, and it could mean eventually being as large as GM, which is managemental, economic, and business suicide.

People LIKE the "econobox" cars...

Yeah, you bet. That would explain why Japanese cars grow larger every year, and why they've started building V8 powered, full frame trucks I guess.

You're missing the point...there was a reason I put econobox in quotes. YOU seem to think that's what they make, but clearly whatever it is they make, it's what people want to buy. There is a reason they are gaining market share, and the way for GM to stay on top is NOT to make cars that nobody really liked in the first place. Trucks, maybe, but that isn't a big enough market by itself to keep GM on top.

It is my understandiung that the reason that Toyota does not want to be no. 1, is because of the possible anti-japanese (Toyota) backlash that they may experience here in the US, if GM drops to #2 or worse. This is the same reason, it was said, that they raised the prices of their cars - to help GM increase sells- ( no source but remember reading somewhere)

At least someone has some sense, unlike all the kids here who rejoice at any bad news about GM.

Does anyone really CARE about GM's cars? No.

GM makes some very nice vehicles. And you should care. They're a huge employer. And if they go under, who do you think will be paying the pensions of all of their retirees?
