i really like how some of them in the big image are sunk into the floor. really good rendering by some intern. seems like a pretty low effort try overall.

If that's a render I linked, it's a VERY impressive job. There are standalone images that are clearly renders, but they aren't pretending to be otherwise. Here's the standalone image of the Cruiser. Obvious render at a glance:

I think there are both Renders and Real photos of most cars, but to be clear, these are early concepts. Most of the real photos, might just be Clay Models.

Toyota's reluctance to make EVs (at least, until now) has been baffling, to be honest. The company leapt on electrification so quickly with the Prius. The company was seemingly so fixated on hybrids and hydrogen cars that it didn't see the rather obvious writing on the wall.

That back door is special. 😛

They had a Rav4 EV in 1997-2003. I don't know why they abandoned it. They worked with Tesla to reintroduce it in 2012. Again abandoning after a few years.

The government was pushing Hydrogen fuel cells with big R&D $$s. Of course, most of the hydrogen produced in the world uses methane steam reforming - which cranks out tons of CO2. It was a bad bet (though Japan probably has the best fuel cell technology in the world now). Anyway, it's been a tough pivot for Toyota and Honda.

They knew they would win anyway. They just didn’t want to pop Ford and GM’s bubble too soon and have to deal with economically punishing voluntary export restraints or the equivalent.

The better build quality and metallurgy will always reel in customers.

I’ll bet LG won’t be making their batteries.

Yeah, but a couple of things:

1: Perspective is making it look worse (see image from different perspective)
2: The Fender almost certain would split like other small SUVs like the Jeep Liberty where half the fender is part of the door.
3: No real prototype exists. All we have is Clay Mock-up and a computer Render. If they ever build a real car, it will change.

Fair enough. Now I'm going to bitch about the modeling tool. Any modern video game has way better perspective control than that render. 😛

Also: read the lettering on the tires. 😀

Hmm. Out of my price range ATM. But I like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 better than what Toyota is showing. Also glad that 'normal' car companies are going with more traditional dash locations instead of the Tesla setup.
As a Honda fan, I'm looking forward to what they have in store. They are further behind the curve than Toyota, but I prefer their design language, control layouts and slightly sportier suspensions compared to Toyota.

Wow, that back door looks like it would be basically impossible to use in real life.

Still looks better than a Cybertruck, though.

The thing about Toyota is they have a loose definition of "EV". They think their Prius counts, for instance. Even the models that can't plug in.

I think Toyota uses the same weasel word for HEV, PHEV, and BEV, as most other manufacturers: "Electrified".

In this case all the concept were supposed to be BEVs, not just "Electrified".

Though who is to say if/when all of those concepts will get built.

Ah, they call it the Compact Cruiser. Interesting. Really looks like what they will replace the 4Runner with. I'm going to assume that none of them will be a ladder on frame that will make the usual suspects confused, since that's what you do to build a rigid frame.
I'm going to assume that Toyota figured out the rigidity of the frame and everything, and that's going to work.
And being a little smaller would really help a bona fide off-road vehicle as well. Cybertrucks and Rivians look cool, but are too big to really get around on most trails, unless you want two wheels hanging off into space.
