Toyota Supra...is it worth it and can you find it at a reasonable price?

I have a little stash of cash saved up, and I was looking into getting a different car. The Supra is fast, stylish, Japanese, rare, and impressive. For these are the reasons I'm interested in it. But the price is unreasonable. Looking on eBay motors a seller wants ~13K for an automatic, stock version of this car. It seems anything with stick is ~$20k because its been riced out. Are there any ones you can pick up with manual tranny/stock/~80k for about 10k? I find that somewhat realistic. I don't know if I even want this because I'm saving up for a house. It just seems like it would be fun. Your thoughts? Anyone have one?

Reasonable price? NO. Myself and at least one other on this board have looked into this (there was a thread about it last week, in fact).

You can find one, but a halfway decent one will be $25k+.

The older ones are pretty cheap, my sisters boyfriend has an 89 that he got for about 2-3K I think.

 

Supra's are not worth the prices they are asking.

You're not going to find any remotely decent mk4 supra TT for 10K. If you think you see such a listing, it's probably a scam asking you to wire money out of the country to have the car "shipped to you".

Manual TTs cost the most, auto TTs still cost an arm, leg and testicle. For a high mileage auto TT, you will still pay something close to 20K.

On a purely performance basis, the supra is getting a little long in the tooth. The platform/engine does have a lot of potential but stock, evos and STIs are basically just as fast, at the same price but with a new car warranty. The look of course is a different subject.

I've read on supra forums suggestions that occasionally a good deal comes around, but you basically need cash (20k+) to buy them before they are gone.

If you are handy, a poor man's supra can be had by buying an SC300 and swapping in a JDM supra TT motor. The main problem is depending on the state you live in, smog can be a bitch. Car+motor can done as low as ~10K.

I was just wondering the same thing, and I've started saving for a house as well. I saw that this car will be FS in Houston in the not too distant future. No idea what he will ask for it though. If I don't want my fiance to kill me, I really shouldn't think about it anymore.

This is a disappointment. My GF's dad is a CEO for an auto body and goes to a bunch of auctions. I wonder if there is any luck going that route. Yes I want the MK4 version.

you can certainly try, but they say the best cars don't even make it to the auctions.

There is nothing special about this vehicle anymore. Why pay a premium for a 10 year old car with a very shady past, considering the number of boy racers out there?

Well...technically, the same holds true for any performance-oriented used car. It's a risk you have to take, unless you buy new.

The thing about a MKIV Supra is, they are out of the price bracket of 95% of the high school / teenager crowd - unlike, say, a Camaro or Mustang of the same vintage. Of course, this doesn't take into account those who get them from their parents.
