Oh, and have more strigent emissions requirements so they use more gas in the process, oh the irony

i have to wonder if the emissions requirements shot themselves in the foot and ended up increasing emissions due to the increased fuel burn

Yeah, it's about 11K vehicles sold a day in 08, so if you add 3 days you add over 30K more vehicles.

I was just on a Toyota lot this weekend and the sales manager said the same thing. It was funny, but they had a 2007 model with about 30k miles, package 2, and wanted it $26k. It had just came in that Saturday, and my friend confirmed it is now sold.

Yet it's just hype. the way 90% of the Prius's are driven, they get just as crappy as gas mileage as other cars.

We could get high 20's in the 50's & 60's, even a 70's Datsun truck could get in the 40's. It sure seems like things have gone backwards.

Unless you think there's some evil conspiracy among the oil majors and automotive manufacturers to artificially hamstring vehicle fuel consumption, then there might be some very good reasons behind cars of 'yesteryear' getting better mileage than their 'equivalent' vehicle today 😉

Modern cars are so much safer, roomier, better equipped and have to meet far more stringent emissions requirements than their 'equivalents' in the 70s, 80s and even the 90s.

That comes at a cost 😉

Roomier... yeah, these wonderful little micromachines that are on the road sure have a lot more room than the older cars 😛

You'll note the very intentional use of the word 'equivalent' in my comment 😉

Equivalent vehicles are much roomier than their 70s/80s counterparts, imho. Just compare a modern Civic to one from the 80s, and then do the same thing for every other vehicle that's sold under the same name badge today.

They're roomier, bigger, much heavier, and indisputably much safer, both actively and passively.

@emissions comments: co2-e and 'emissions' in their traditional sense are two very different things, the latter generally meaning SOX/NOX/particulates etc etc.
