Toyota recalls first-generation Prius hybrids
Toyota in the UK has recalled all first-generation Prius hybrids after it was discovered the hybrid battery pack can leak.

The leakage, which Toyota says does not pose a safety threat, can affect all models sold in the period of 2000-03 and affects 1,239 petrol/electric hybrids in the UK.

1,200 vehicles? Damn, I thought this would be something major. Hell, it doesn't even affect US models...

That being said, sucks for them

Why does this sound fishy

"Toyota has instructed dealers to give affected Prius Mk1 owners a bottle of champagne, and to return their car valeted and with a tank of fuel."

I guess the silver lining is that these cars now have free, brand-new batteries. I don't know what the life expectancy of them are but these people just got a reset timer.

Edit: Looks like they are just resealing them.. 🙁

when i had the scion tc and took it in for the sunroof deflector recall, they sent me a limited edition diecast model of the tc from Jada toys...just a little something in return i guess.

Yes, I think that acid is acidic 😀

Only 1239 vehicles? I was opening this thread expecting this to be the downfall of hybrids.

Because it could be minimal. I doubt there's huge cracks and the liquid are leaking everywhere. I've had normal batteries leaked before, and they weren't soaking wet. They just had a little crust on them.

meh, another recall that toyota gets by with but you flip around and say GM and everyone would be all over it.

It's 1200 cars. When we're talking about 100,000 or more, then come back. I don't own a Toyota, never have. Nor do i own stocks in them. All the cars i've ever own, has been American. Ford Bronco, Grand Am, and Ford Mustang.

Well that 1239 happens to be 100% of all the Prius sold in the UK from '00 to '03 if I read the article right...but no, it is not the downfall of hybrids or Toyota 😀

There's always bound to be some flaws in first generation vehicles.
