You are expecting $7500 tax liability this year? Just making sure. I'm surprised you can even get it considering they are only bringing 5k over here? and they are supposed to go to states with Cali Zev rules.

Can you explain further?

Between me and the working wife, we easily have an overall tax liability for a given year of $20k+

What are you referring to when you say "only bringing 5k over here"? You mean manufacturing 5,000+ of the RAV4 Prime? From what I understand they are starting to pump them out like crazy with manufacturing in CA area. I also made sure to call up the dealership and have them put the order in ASAP.

What do you mean by "Cali Zev rules"?

I have in all honesty... never bought a car new until now.... nor have I pre-ordered a vehicle.... So I'm not sure what to expect or when to expect it.

My understanding is I will pay MSRP + stuff like a few hundred for a delivery fee since they are moving it across country specifically for me....

We will see when it comes time to actually fully signing once it arrives....

Thus far the only things I have signed or been given has been MSRP labeled pricing.

It’s good that you placed an order early because you should be fine since you placed an order before dealers started acting like asshats. Those placing orders now will probably not get MSRP as dealers are quoting people $5k+ upcharges depending on the market. Those trying to purchase straight from the lot are hearing $10k upcharges in NY and CA.

I think Ive decided I’m going to pounce on VW‘s id4 when they go on reservation later in September. Hopefully the stealerships play nice on that launch.

Same thing is going on with the Telluride. You used to be able to find a dealer that would let you order at MSRP. Now even ordering a Telluride and waiting 3 months will cost you above MSRP.

Their last release regarding the launch said they are only launching with 5000 by the end of the year because of battery supply problems. Of the initial US allocation most are being sold in ZEV states. They hope to hit 20k a year starting in 2021.

FYI. The RAV4 hybrid is built in Kentucky and Canada. The RAV4 Prime is strictly imported from Japan.

Heh, I wonder if part of it is in my state of TX just having less demand than CA/NY like you mentioned.

Dealers can do that just like any sellers can when there's a line of people but with limited inventory.

Ultimately the question is ... How do they decide which dealers get x amount of inventory of the prime?

Yes, this. Sorry i didn't explain better.
Toyota cuts output of RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid for US to laughable 5,000 units

The tax liability is the total tax you owe the feds from stuff like income, capital gains. Just want to make sure you can take the full amount.

Yeap, the only thing I wanted to make sure of is I've never had a non-refundable tax credit.... ever.... so one thing I wanted to make sure of is regardless of how much I withheld that I could still get the credit "refunded".

Which seems to be the case - regardless of if the IRS owes me a "refund" for withholding too much - as long as my total tax owed for the year is over the $7,500 I'm good to go.

Also - by my calculation, at minimum I would need $90,000 (filing Married jointly) with standard deduction of $24,800 to come out with an overall tax liability of above $7500.

Also to be clear - originally when we were shopping for this - I was calling dealers like crazy to see if I had to get on waiting lists, etc...

I got slightly different and sporadic answers from all of them. Many of them were anticipating getting MAYBE 1 just from how they anticipated having to split the low amount across all the dealerships in the US. Mostly it just seemed like dealers had no clue and weren't being told by Toyota.

Then apparently Toyota started a pre-order process and I just quickly got on the list from a dealer. Apparently I was the 2nd person from that dealer to put in a request.

I was told plenty of times that to not expect them until December or January 2020, but just got the call this week to expect it by end of September, maybe early October.

They have been in production since June. Some are about to hit dealer lots in ZEV states. Most are being allocated to the west coast and New York.

Its fortunate for you that you ordered one early. Outside of orders that were placed early dealers in Texas are not really getting any allocations for 2020. Same goes for every other non Zev state.

I’m in Texas too. I looked into it but way to late to order one.

And ordering cars is weird. They don’t just put a request in for your car and then it’s built. It all comes down to when a car is built to your specs/color comes down the assembly line and if you are the first in queue for that combination. There are people who have gotten lucky to have received their Telluride in a month from ordering and then there are those that have waited 6+ months. I think there was someone that waited nine.

I’ve decided on the VW id4. The moment the reservation system goes live I’m reserving two. One for me and one for my wife. Being in Texas ordering it is the only way to get it anytime before summer 2021 or later as all of these evs and plug-in hybrids are mostly allocated to Zev states.

Looking back now, my pre-order actually just went out at the beginning of this month - Aug 3rd. That's not that long ago at all. I mean, I was calling up dealers and such June-July - but they basically didn't have anything for me to do until Aug.

And yeah, I guess I am lucky - I went with XSE model (Instead of standard SE) and tacked on the Premium package on top of it. I guess that falls in line with what they are anticipating.

the prius prime has been out for ages and basically is the same thing. Tesla's only take at most a hour to charge with a super charger i dont know about that hours to charge nonsense. however the reason i dont want a EV is the range. i drive often to SF or LA and its 200 miles each way, a 500 mile range would be more realistic to me, 42 miles would be perfect for my daily commute to work, my regular gas honda accord gets 40 mpg and its a 7 mile drive, not sure how much i would save buying a 50k$ suv that cant fit the whole family. a tahoe sized SUV with 600 miles range for that price would be great. Electricity is 30-40+c kwh here and im lazy to do math but ill keep waiting.

Strollers and car seats are huge...but usually midsize sedan accommodates car seats better because there is more space between the front and rear seat backs.

This. Car seats are huge these days compared to past.

Add on diapers, clothes, sleeping clothes, formula/milk/bottles, breast pump, and countless others shit and you're going to have stuffed suitcases.

I mean, it's fine - we could survive on a sedan (and have). It's mostly the travel part.... Be it a road trip or an airline trip, it just requires so much fucking shit. So if you're a typical American that doesn't travel (or only travels without your kids) then you're probably fine.

Getting a huge ass Tahoe seems appealing for size... But I'll be honest, I just don't want anything remotely that big. Might as well buy an RV or some shit if space is what you want.

Tahoe is only 9 inches longer than an outback. my pickup is 239 inches. 3 feet longer than a tahoe. lol.

and the volt came out before the prime. The Volt is still a great car, we have a 2013 with 90k on it that we use when ever we don't need the truck.

GM says 2020 Tahoe is 210" long, 81" wide and 76" tall
Subaru says 2020 Outback is 192" long, 73" wide and 66" tall

well some people have more than 4 people in their family. recommending a RV? guess you dont go camping or make large purchases. right now i have a honda pilot that seats 8 but with very little storage space, we are OK with it, enjoy its 4 wheel drive and its been reliable but id like something a little bigger. ever seen anyone drive a RV to costco or to the park? nope, now even better would be a suburban electric with 500 mile range :) but those are even more expensive and i dont feel like spending my money that way. (never had a car payment before just pay cash)

Considering the much anticipated electric f150 will probably start around $70k. A full size electric suv would be a halo car at this point. The likely only one will be the Hummer 1000 or whatever nonsense they are calling that thing.

I’d totally buy the F150 ev but Ford doesn’t seem serious about getting it to market anytime soon.

Ive looked into a lot of cars because I’m buying one by years end. The avg person/family doesn’t need mid sized, let alone a full sized suv. Most could get away with a compact suv. Which is why that’s going to be the biggest hybrid ev market going forward with VW leading the mass market way. I would buy their electric van but it’s 3-4 years off.

I wanted a plug in hybrid but it just don't make sense to me, I picked up a used CR"Z" hybrid few yrs ago and averaging 40mpg year round on a tiny 7g tank, I won't recover my $ over the course of a plug in. Now looking to get a Zero bike instead.

I’m hoping VW Id4s are priced like expected. They will undercut the RAV4 prime. Hopefully I can get my reservations in early enough to get two shipped and delivered by dec 31.

That's a common question and the terminology can be very confusing. You are correct as far as I know.

Yeah I googl'd around earlier, it looks correct.

Amazingly... Texas is offering me another $2,500 in state tax rebate on top of the federal... Sooo... fucking yahoo!!!!!

Waiting to get a call to say that it arrived still.

I adjusted my employer tax withholding to basically stop all federal income tax withholds since I know I'll be getting that credit (hopefully) heh
