My car is at 60,000 miles right now. I scheduled an appointment at my local Toyota and they said at 60,000 miles, they recommend changing my timing belt. Should I go for it?

unless you want to change it yourself

did they give you a price? it usually runs $100-$300 depending on if they have to remove the radiator or any other major parts to get to the cover

i changed mine on my '90 mazda myself, at about 70K miles, i haven't changed it since , it is now at around 160K miles , hopefully it doesn't break before i junk the car . the belt i removed at 70K miles looked almost as good as the brand new one i put on

Yes and also have the water pump and front seal replaced at the same time. Abd you don't have to have the dealer do it. You can have a good mechanic do it a lot cheaper.

Oops.. I know on the phone they said "timing-something". I was too busy contemplating the possibility of plunking down >$100. (hehe) Is a timing chain more expensive than a timing belt?

Seriously, thanks for the feedback so far.

And if I recall correctly, there isn't a time/mileage interval for it's replacement.

yeah, i thought (i am not a "car guy") that chains lasted much longer/only need to be replaced if worn/broken

After doing a bunch of reading, the only thing that I could find is to change the chain when it starts making noise. Hope that helps.

Just looked it up. 1998 is the first year the Corolla has a timing chain. Now what month and year was your car made? If it is a early 98 it may still have a 97 engine and still have a belt. If it is a true 1998 1.8L 4cyl and has a chain, you do not need to change anything.

I just got back after dropping off the car. The guy that took my car in said that replacing the timing chain wasn't necessary at all. Looks like the person I talked to on the phone didn't know what they were talking about. (whew)

I don't know what month the car was made, but I bought the car June 1998. I wish I could look it up right now, but the car is at the dealership right now.

Thanks for all the help.

Nah, no belt or chain is the winnar.

I like engines without them, no need to worry about another part needing to be replaced...
