And Honda is about to introduce the Pilot, which takes dead aim, in size, price and purpose, at the Highlander.

lots of imaginary pilots on the road i see :)

i'm pretty sure the highlander is the rx300 and the pilot is the mdx.

they are just changed a little bit, but very little.

i've never been in a pilot, but my mom has an rx300, my dad has a mdx and my friend's dad has a highlander. and i've got to say the mdx is probably the best one out of all of them, i mean, it seats 7, seems to actually handle better than the rx300 , possibly since its wheels arent as close to the center, and has a more powerful engine. that and i think it looks far manlier than an rx300 and highlander.

The Highlander uses the same basic platform, but is an entirely different beast than the RX300. It's also cheaper, has more cargo/interior space. The Pilot is probably the best of them all right now. The MDX looks just about as overstyled as the RX300 to me

i guess i just think of the mdx as more manly since its lines are sharper than the rx, that and the rx is small and more rav4 / honda crv like (which i've like subconciously associated with women also).

The RX300 is a larger vehicle than the RAV4/CRV. The MDX just looks a bit "spacey" to me, and the interior isn't as classy as I would expect from a vehicle in that price range. The Honda Pilot is just the epitome of the segment and is the vehicle that I would go for if I were in the market for an SUV right now. I mean, we have a '02 Highlander Limited now, but the Pilot surpasses it on almost every front for about the same money.

The only problem is, the Pilot is NOT the same money on the open market. A friend of mine is looking at buying one of these vehicles, and the Pilot (at least here in western Washington) is selling for thousands above sticker - Edmunds' "True Market Value" price reflects this as well. Honestly I can't imagine I would ever pay over MSRP for any vehicle, ever, and as a practical matter the Highlander is available for thousands less than the Pilot. For my part, not that I am an SUV guy by any means, the MDX looks the best of any of these vehicles, and offers the most impressive package overall.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Grand Cherokee is a very capable vehicle. But I wouldn't describe it as "manly". It's too luxo-comfy-silly-fru-fru. If you want manly look to a dually pickup or a full size 4x4 like the old Blazer.

I was referring to the vehicles under discussion (i.e., MDX, Pilot, Highlander, RX300) when I said the MDX was my favorite. If we are throwing every SUV ever made into the mix, I think my sentimental favorite is the old, first-gen Bronco with removable top, with the 1969-72 302 V-8 model as my specific pick.

The Honda Pilot and Nissan Murano will give the Highlander plenty of competition. Which means lower prices for the consumer. :)

and yet in comparison, if the cherokee were thrown into this bunch, it would still be the most manly. i didn't make any claims as to its stature in comparison to the K-blazer

My point was, that the Pilot is the better vehicle...but you are right about the price. The same is true for the MDX and Odyssey and it's all Honda's fault IMHO for not having the production facilities to flood the market.

also the other thing i've got to say is i hate all these new super complicated air conditioning systems. my dad's mdx has like a touch screen with like all this crap. its like overkill for the radio and air conditioning. and we still havent figured out how to make the navigation system not automatically come on every time.

like i drive a nissan altima. its got aknob for air conditioning and a knob for the radio. its very easy . the mdx has like the touch screen sensor, like auto temp ajustment, like some sort of crazy joystick for changing stations. no up and down tune. its like a 4 way rocker switch. its just annoying. my dad who drives the car seems to like all those buttons, but i just think its so overbuilt .

heh, people can't even program their vcrs, why would they be expected to figure out the most complicated a/c system known to man?

RTFM!! :D :D

Our Highlander Limited has a simple two knob automatic climate control system. One large knob for temperature and one large knob for blower speeds; both of which control the electronic display. If you want the A/C to a certain temperature, you turn the temp knob til you see the temp you want on the screen. Then you hit the "Auto" button. Once you do this the system will automatically adjust blower speeds to match the temperature you set. Same goes for heat.

I used the temp/audio system in the RX300 (which has a similar touch screen operation to the MDX), and I find it easy to use.

As for the touch screens, that what you need when you combine DVD, Audio, and Climate Control in a small amount of dash space.

can you vent that way?

i swear my former roommate had his compressor running when his heater was on.

Do you mean vent the air from the outside w/o having the actual A/C on?? If that's what you mean (at least on our highlander), you just set the blower speed to whatever you want and turn off the A/C by hitting the A/C button.
