Heh - that is pretty strange. I like the exterior though.

Looks like a GT-R and 350z sexed each other and that was the bloody mess that popped out. 🙁

So the Toyotabaru lives.

As for power, if you want power' you're barking up the wrong tree. Initial estimates when the concept first came out reported a weight around or under 1 metric tonne (2200lbs) and power under or around 180-200hp.

Of course the course of this car evolved over time so you can probably expect it to weight less than 2500-2600lbs in RWD form from later reports, feature both a 2.0L N/A boxer and 2.5L Turbo come as RWD or AWD.

I think this car is still evolving sine original sticker price would start under 20k, but this new Celica looks to be shaping up very well. It's a shame they killed the old one, the last gen Celica was actually very fun to drive. Sad there is no mention of the 2.5L turbo option or RWD/AWD option though I guess if there is no turbo, the AWD powertrain wouldn't come into play.

In other words, expect a light, small, low power car.

Man, a Turbo'd AWD version of that car would be freaking sick.

If I am correct, the 2.0L F4 isn't a bad engine. The car will probably use the DI F4 EJ20, probably the DOHC version, not sure if it will be the AVCS version though.

The thing is the AVCS DOHC version gets up to 190hp without DI (JDM legacy) anyways so assuming they can get that emissions and CARB approved, we're probably looking at up to 205hp, but probably more likely a round 200.

If they don't bring the AVCS system across, I could see a solid 170-180hp.

I think they canned the turbo AWD version so it doesn't cannibalize WRX sales. Toyota doesn't control Subaru, but they still have a vested interest in Subaru doing well. With a turbo I4, you'd be looking at a great looking car that would offer the exact same WRX performance at a WRX price.

It'd be like the VW GTI v.s. Scirocco not coming to North America for the same price, why not buy the much better looking car? It costs a lot to re-engineer a platform to accept transverse and longitudinal engine configurations and in the end, it won't help recoup the costs all that well.

If I remember correctly, my friend who works at a Subaru stealership said that Toyota would not bring it here, but Subaru is bringing a version of it with all-wheel drive. I hope that they both bring their versions here and I'm skeptical at my friends words, but I really don't see a huge following for it here unless it's super cheap or an astounding car.

But I like it, the looks will be toned down (both exterior and interior) and those wheels will hopefully go. But other than that, I think it is a solid looking car and maybe it will live upto its 86 heritage.

Looks a lot like a Hyundai Genesis Coupe and some like a Nissan 370z....

Not terribly original, but nice none the less.

didn't notice that at first but yeah it seems out of place. The front would look slightly more sleek without it.

ill stick with my source, a guy who works for TMNA as a strategic planning guy.

What I don't get is why they used a Subaru engine. I love Suburu motors, but Toyota makes some pretty damn good inline 4's from what I understand. The H-4 is more compact, but there are plenty of small sports cars with an I-4. I just don't get it. Not that I mind 😉

Looks great, not sure what that sleeve on the shifter is though, anyone have any ideas?

Probably a design exercise. The entire interior is just a prototype design exercise, none of those parts look anywhere near what a production ready interior would look like.

As much as I'd like to get a 2AR-GSE(or GTSE) with wide angle valves, VVTL-i and direct injection (and maybe a turbo) development costs are probably once again holding them back. I think they're playing it like the last gen Celica/MR2, trying to conrol dev costs for a relatively low selling vehicle.

Subaru already had a nice 190hp DI F4 so I think Toyota figured might as well rummage through their parts bin.
