well.....my sis is lookin for a car now and we've got it down to these two which come out to almost the same with all the options. the sentra is $1000-$2000 more and i think she should get that. But she tells me she doesn't care, she just wants a car tht gets good mileage and is really reliable. Now my question is are nissans as reliable as toyotas..........im mean my dad has a 96 camry which to this date has had no engine problems, trans problems, or anything else other than regular wear and tear. That is pretty solid........so in this case which one would be better?

Get the Sentra. It's no comparison. Sentra is in same class as Corolla. Echo is a notch below.
I wouldn't want to be driving on those tiny wheels that echo has :)

Seeing as it is for your sister, I would go with the Echo. It's cheaper, it has Toyota build quality, it's easy to park, and it gets 50+mpg. A friend of mines mom has one, and she let me take it for a spin. It's surprisingly peppy, in spite of the fact that it is the ultimate chick car. :D

I think the Sentra's build quality and reliability are equal if not better than the Echo's, and it has a number of other advantages as well. IMO, Sentra hands down.

Yhea, with all the same options they come out to about the same although their base prices vary dramatically. Toyota plays gimmicks by giving you a box with wheels for base while Nissan gives you lots of standars......another question I have is that if the dealer does not have the car you want, does it cost them anything to get the kind I want? I heard somewhere that it doesn't..........

Sentra absolutely NO competition, it's a step up, and if I were considering a Sentra, an Echo wouldn't even be in the picture...

They got rid of the SE package this year. The SE is now the SER and SER V-spec.

<< In my opinion the ECHO is fugly, the sentra looks alot better. >>

Yawp...but there's some even better-looking cars at that size. Why not look at the Matrix, Civic, RSX, Cavaleir, Sunfire, Focus...

I believe Sentra base model is the same cost as Echo base model.

It depends on which style she likes.

Echo - has a good mpg (30 or 31), enough to be on top 10 gas saving car
-when you add all the options like power windows, air conditioning, the cost is the same as a Corolla, so not that cheap. Echo is very roomy and if she likes the looks, it's got the Toyota reliability and it'll be a good buy.

-Sentra, I sat in the thing, it's tiny. If your sister is small, this is a good buy. Cost is good.

The Sentra's front seats are roomier than the Echo's. I know this both from personal experience and the fact that all of the Sentra's dimensions up front are equal to or greater than the Echo's. The Echo's rear is a little bigger but overall the Sentra still has more passenger volume, according to Carpoint.

I can't believe you're serious. I've driven both cars and would recommend the Sentra hands down.

Even ignoring that it is better looking, nicer all around, etc. just take the Echo on the highway in a slight crosswind and you'll realize that Toyota failed to get around basic forces of nature: Tall + thin + light + high speed + wind = very unstable and crappy.
