Toyota considers GM Link-up to stop Renault-Nissan

Toyota considering GM linkup

Toyota Motor Corp. is considering making a bid to link with General Motors, according to a report in BusinessWeek magazine. The move would be aimed at trumping a proposed alliance between GM and Renault-Nissan.

The magazine reported Saturday that Toyota "is considering its options and looking at different opportunities that they could propose to GM." It said Toyota executives have "war gamed" possible scenarios by which it could help GM with its turnaround.

BusinessWeek quoted an unnamed Toyota executive who said, "Toyota has no interest in seeing an alliance like this [involving Renault, Nissan and GM] take place."

GM CEO Rick Wagoner and Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn met Friday night in Detroit. The companies later issued a joint statement saying they will take about 90 days to explore potential benefits of a tie-up.

Wagoner hinted to Automotive News last week that deals with other automakers besides Renault-Nissan are possible.

"Could other things arise?" he said. "Sure, they could happen any time, but nothing else I can talk to you about today."

call me confused, but where does this help Toyota at all? they have no experience with turning around brands.

GM WISHES it had an ounce of Toyota's reputation, as the article says, it would be to prevent the alliance with Renault-Nissan, which could bring very serious future competition for Toyota. Toyota isn't the most profitable car company in the world for nothing.

You're joking, right? Toyota would gain a permanent foothold in the American car market via the most well-known car manufacturer collaboration in America.

It would help Toyota with heavy duty trucks. It could also help them cut costs by taking over/sharing some of GM's plants.

Not only that - but they'd gain a foothold in GM's more lucrative and profitable segment - commerical sales, with access to heavy duty suppliers (think abotu Toyota's Truck Lineup)

Matrix/Vibe

that was a joint venture.

this would be buying a 10% (or somthing) share into GM's stock.

i dont see what Toyota gains... honestly...

maybe some engine/transmission tech, and a parts bin... but who wants GM's parts bin?

they all have access to the same suppliers anyways.

they prevent a giant competitor that has proven ability to take market share.

"Toyota is the most profitable company in Japan. Its net profit for fiscal 2004 was reported at 1.16 trillion yen ($10.5 billion). This is after-tax, clear profit, the first time in the history of Japanese capitalism that a company has passed one trillion yen in profits.

Toyota sold 1.3 million fewer cars than world-leader General Motors and had some $22.7 billion less in gross sales, yet its profit was twice that of GM's. What this tells you is how thoroughly Toyota has implemented cost-reduction measures.

Toyota ranks fourth in the world in profit (#1 is ExxonMobil), but setting aside the oil companies and banks, Toyota is number one among manufacturers. "Wring even a dry rag" is Toyota's motto when it comes to the pursuit of profit, and I have often written about the pains of its "wrung-out" subcontractors and the suffering of its workers."

This must be Mikemike's worst nightmare! 😉

An arrangement like this could possibly help Toyota to become the larest Auto-Manufacturer by far. Since GM hasn't quit cutting yet, Toyota could possibly get its' hands on Assets that it can use for pennies on the $.

Toyota just wants to run GM into the ground so it has no competition for #1, that's why it doesn't want Carlos Ghosn to turn around GM.
