Toyota camry engine question

RU482

Lifer
I'm looking at a 1999 Camry LE with 2.2L 4 cylinder engine.

I've read in the past that Toyota's had problems with engine oil sludge developing if you don't change your oil enough or under certain driving conditions. Does this apply to the V6 or the 4 cyl. engine? (or both?)

Also, does the 2.2L 4 cylinder have a timing chain or belt? I heard it had a chain (good) but seems non-characteristic of a Japanese 4 banger (usually have a timing belt to cut cost)

I have a 98 camry...I change the oil every 3000 miles...and I'm gonna hit 100,000 miles within the next week.

Whoever made that statement probably treated their car like crap..

A. Probably wrong forum.
B. I own a 2000 Camry and got a letter from Toyota awhile back that I think talked about that problem. I'll see if I can dig it up.

huh?

redly1
I have a 1995 Camry with 160,000 miles
I use Mobile 1 oil and change it @ 8,000 miles
I change the Timing belt every 60,000 miles
And this car will do 200,000 with out a trouble

This one time I posted in Hot Deals and everyone made speculations as to who's Toyota is the most tired...

Yea, yea big whoop, a neighbor has 650,000+ original miles on his Ford Ranger 4 cyl...

To answer the original question, any vehicle can develop "sludge" build up if you don't change the oil often enough. The driving conditions (dusty, sandy, dirty, hot) could just make the "sludge" form sooner.
