Toyota 22R ticking/clacking sound

I have an 82 toyota 4x4 with a stock 22R motor in it. Yes, this is the same one that blew a headgasket a while back. Had the headgasket replaced, and then took her in for emissions. The emissions shop "tuned" her (super lean), and ever since I got her back, she makes this bad tick/tack sorta clacking sound. I have already re-tuned the carb back to stock, and it runs very well -- getting right around 21mpg city, 26mpg highway with lots of power.

Issue is the ticking. It sounds like it is coming from only piston one, and it only happens once per revolution of the motorn -- e.g. I can make out the individual noises, even at 2000rpm. It does not make the sound at idle, nor does it make the sound when coasting. It only ticks/tacks/clacks when under acceleration or under load (hills).

I am guessing that I have loose or misadjusted valves, meaning I should pop the valve cover and adjust them.

Any ideas? Thanks!

All the reading I did continually mentioned exhaust leak as possible problem, and that makes sense to my 3-banana mind. Any idea on how to check if there is a leak in the exhaust manifold?

If it's an exhaust problem, I know this great place downtown called Front Range Muffler. Other than that, damned if I could help you out, as I'm only a 2-banana brain.

Haha, you must be in Colorado Springs as well -- I actually live < 3 blocks from that shop, and a roommate just had his civic there! I'm trying to avoid taking it places, because I seem to continually get the shaft from mechanic places unless I personally know the owner ... if you want it done right, you gotta do it yourself, you know?

Hmmm.. well, adjusting the valves definately wouldn't hurt regardless.

I'm not sure what would make that kind of noise, if it isn't the valves/lifters.. Could be rod knock, but thats usually a lower pitched clunk and of course it comes from inside the engine block, not the heads.

Buy a stethoscope(those heart thingies that doctors use), and listen around on your engine, try and pinpoint where it's comming from.

That's a good idea ... only issue is that I am not sure that it does it at idle / rev'd in neutral. It might do it, and I just can't hear it because it's too quiet, but I do know that it is only audible from the cab when under load (moving).

sit in the car with the windows up, and put the car in nutreal and give it some gas. if after about 30 minutes or so you feel light headed, you have an exhaust leak, this is how i found out, but i was just stuck in traffic.
