Toughbook's Aren't that tough.

i have one of the old cf-71s, pII. its awesome. the outside case is all metal, their advertising included using it to stop a bullet.

we have a few for our field guys and we've had more than once come back in with a dead drive

I had one yeah it was tough - problem is I can break a lot of $399 laptop to catch up to a pre obsolete $4000 toughbook

For ordinary use, the Lenovo Thinkpads are the go to choice by business travelers for durability.

I think Panasonic Toughbooks are pretty tough. Based on their construction and exactly how a round may hit the laptop they will stop low velocity rounds, but not reliably. I find them not specced that well, the screen sucks and they are not generally worth the price premium. I dumped mine after a couple of years.

Anyway, General Dynamics Itronix makes what are most likely the toughest laptops -

Using SSD drives really increases the durability factor, if not the bullet resistance.

If you expect you are going to be shot at (most every American inner city, Kabul, Grozny, wherever - put some ballistic panels into your laptop case or just buy a case with them built in -

Cheap source of panels, etc. -

Maybe something like this Pelican case with added ballistic panels works best -

I found it sad that the tiger attacked the laptop so readily. Thatanimal must be so bored that anything different is something new to play with. lol

omg omg is that a new toy?! oooo what is it?! hmm, doesn't taste good. gonna toss it around a bit, see if it gets more fun. maybe there's a treat inside?! hmm... NOOO DON'T TAKE IT BACK!!! .... i hate you

We did use Toughbooks for our field tech's at my work. However we switched to Dell Laptops and they do fine in the field. It is funny with a toughbook the field guy's where treating them pretty bad. However the Dell Laptops are treated much nicer, are faster, cheaper and with Dell complete care in-case anything happens it is covered.

I saw one get run over by a 10 ton John Deere steer loader. The screen broke, but it still booted. This was back in the late 90's when they were like a small briefcase in size.

Toughbooks generally die faster. The reason being since they're supposed to withstand abuse, the users abuse them regularly.
Amusingly, cheap Dells last longer since users see them as fragile glass after getting used to abusing Toughbooks.
