Theoretical situation: You have the chance to save someone's life by donating a kidney. You will extend their life, but drastically shorten yours. Would you do it?

You are put into the two different situations below, what do you do? Do you donate or not?

[*]Situation 1: A loved one is in need of a kidney and you are a perfect match. Do you donate? For all purposes we will say the loved one is a family member.

[*]Situation 2: A complete stranger is in need of a kidney and you happen to be a perfect match. Do you donate? For all purposes you have no ties to this person and have never even met them before.

Please don't reply with a simple yes or no. I want to hear your reasoning and see your differences when it comes to family member or stranger.

Situation 1: No doubt.

Situation 2: Maybe.

I also have no idea what it's like to live without one.

1. Yes. A loved ones life is more important in my eyes than my own.
2. No way. Why is a complete strangers life more important than mine?

1. life or death? yes. i have a friend with one kidney, he lives fine, why do i need two?

2. if i died, i would donate it (organ donor). if i was fine and i didn't know the person at all...tough luck pal. call me selfish but i look out for me and my family first, friends second, everyone else falls to the wayside.

What would be the factors leading to a yes? To a no?

How much does it shorten my life? How much pain or trouble would I be in for the rest of the life I have to live?

I would even take these into consideration when giving it to a loved one. If my 98 year old grandma suddenly needed a kidney, I would hope she would want me to live a full life with both my kidneys than to extend her already full life for a year or two.

Edit: If it doesn't affect or shorten my life in any way other than the surgery I'd have to get it done, I don't think I'd have any problems with donating it to anyone if they were a perfect match. I wouldn't go out searching for these people, though. :p

1. D'pends. Were it my immediate family (mother, sister or in the future my wife/children) I'd say there's an 80% chance of my saying yes. To anyone else in my family? I'd say fsck off you dimwits, you prol'ly deserved it.

2. HELL NO. There's no way you'd catch me willingly entering the hospital to remove perfectly good organs to give to someone else. It practically took God Himself coming down to earth and telling me to go and get my gall bladder removed when it was "diseased" last year.
