Tough question: probs on WinXP install

Okay, here's the deal. I have an old Compaq. It's never been stable; I had random crashes all the time when I used it. I built a new PC, and want to turn the old one in to a (slow) folding box. But I can't get the pre-installation to finish. It always crashes either when formatting or copying files (I'm using a Dell install CD, so I'm not sure if the process is different from using the regular method). Is this a diagnoseable problem? Is this system trash?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I memtested this rig for 24 hours, so I'm pretty sure it's not a RAM issue.

I think those dell installs work only on the dell systems that they were packaged with. I may be wrong on that, though.

Get a full copy of XP. The Dell CD is only licenced for the Dell it came with, and will probably only work with that model Dell.

Well, I think this is a hardware related issue. And this CD installed WinXP on a custom system I built. I'm trying to figure out if the mobo (or other hardware) is causing these problems.
