Tough clip

I just got my gc-68 in the mail today, and for the life of my I can not get the darn thing on. I spend 45 minutes trying everything I could think of. The clip will just barely reach the top of the socket with me pushing almost as hard as I can. If I push any harder I am afraid I will crack the core. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get this thing on?

Word is that you need to bend the clips.

I just removed the fan, got out a proper sized screwdriver, drank that, and proceeded to convince myself I had just crushed my CPU. Since it worked I'm assuming I didn't. Not a friendly HSF to attach.

I know what that feels like. The best advice I can give you is to take off the fan if you havent already. It is so much easier after that. Then I would say to move the clip mostly to the side that you clip on second, just enough so you can barely get it on the first side. Then I would take a flathead screwdriver, and push down and away from the heatsink. I just slowly worked it until the clip would finally reach. Also, if you have an Athlon XP then cracking your core isnt as much of a concern, just as long as you distribute the pressure evenly. Hope this helps.

i have the gc68 with a 1.4 tbird. while it was definately one of the tighter clips i've installed, i didn't really think it was all that hard to install. just get a flathead screwdriver with a large handle that fits into the clip well, and press down. bending will most probably help, as when i swapped out my motherboard and reinstalled the hsf, it seemed much easier to put on.

good luck!

LOL
seriously, take off the fan (but if you take off the grill to replace the fan, REMEMBER to put it on the right way or your fan won't spin and you'll get temps over 63c). after bending the clips a lil bit, clip it to the side on the top of the slot (the side with the handlebar's joint is), then, with a screwdriver, place the whole shaft (the metal pole) of the screwdriver against the whole top of the clip of the heatsink gradually but firmly while pulling the other clip out so you can just slide it in its side. pretty easy, after trying a lot of other ways to get the damn thing on for 15 minutes! 😉

for my experience, do NOT press down on the heatsink clip with the end of any screwdriver. it will always slip out and you'll wind up stabbing your motherboard.
