Tough choices about an 800 mile road trip

My buddy has a passat that badly needs a new clutch and has for months. He doesen't want to drive for the whole trip if we take his car and he's affraid his clutch might not make it if he switches off to me because it's been so long since I've driven a stick. I concur as I know I'm not very good.

I have my V6 mustang that badly needs new tires (1/3 the surface of the rear tires is bald)

I really like the Yokohoma AVS db S2 (and will be mounting them within the next 3 weeks regardless of what's decided here), which is a very sticky tire and especially when new, hurts gas mileage and I really don't want to wear in my brand new tires on 800 miles of boring freeway when I can do it on backroads instead. It is both my current tire and the one I'm planning on buying again.

I expect the following
2 gas tanks on the passat
4-5 gas tanks on my current tires
5 or maaaybe even 6 tanks on my mustang with new tires

The trip is 800 miles round trip and all freeway. Your suggestions?

Do you really feel like taking a chance on loosing a clutch on an 800 mile trip? Take the Mustang. or

Option 5 - Look into renting a car.

lol you got a v6 stang, an auto one at that, who gives a ****** if you got performance tires on it. just get a good set of all seasons and be done with it. those damn tires don't make a bit of difference with such a gutless car

You will do very little shifting on the drive if you time it so you don't hit any metro areas at busy times of day.

I would either:
(1) Just get the new clutch installed. He has to do it someday. Might as well do it now. Plus it'll be cheaper than taking your Mustang, so think of the clutch as a cost saving investment.

or

(2) If you aren't driving in inclimate weather, just go with your bald tires. When you get back, buy new tires for yourself.

i'll have to disagree with driving on bald tires, blowouts are a bitch on road trips. and on that long of a trip on soft performance tires I almost guarntee in the 800 (or 1600 if it was only one way) that one of those tires will blow out if they are bald

Get new tires. You are a road hazard to everyone around you, you @$$H0L13! Driving around on bald tires is careless and inconsiderate of the people who have to share the road with you because you increase your chances of causing an accident or having a blowout. You need new tires anyway, regardless of the trip. So just get them and stop being a menace on the road. Get new tires and drive the mustang. And 800 miles of freeway driving should no way need 5 or 6 tanks of gas.

The real question here is:

What will get your more chicks? Nice mustang with new tires or Grinding the clutch of a Passat?

You know, when I was 17, I went out and bought a car. Clearly I didn't get a brand new maxima or whatever you guys happen to drive, but I got a good car that is mechanically sound and I like. I bought the yokohoma's after I torched the set of potenzas that came with it and the difference in the corners was so night and day I'll never look back.

Next car will probably be a 6-speed MX-5 GT, but that's a way's down the road. For better or worse, this is the car I have and I'd appreciate it if you'd lay off.

I'm just missing the outside shoulders on my back tires because I was slow in rotating the last set and it's all wear from my heavy cornering when those tires were on the front. They aren't all bald and I have had absolutley no traction issues what-so-ever except for a little bit of slippage coming off of stops. I understand that I am approaching some threshhold for blowout risk, but that's why I'm going to ask my mechanic about it when I take it in today for some unrelated maintanance. I don't see how that makes me an asshole.

that still doesn't get past the fact your driving a v6 auto stang and worying about performance, if you worried about performance you should be driving something compeltly different ethier gone for a real mustang and not the chick version. or some other car in your pricerange that is a performance car and not some silly sportscar wannabe

Awww, did your daddy buy you your first car when you were 17? I'll bet it was a "real sports car."

 What did you drive when you were 17? Huh? I couldn't afford a used subaru and I found a good deal on a used mustang... so I bought it with my own fvkcing money. I'm willing to bet it's 100% more car than you actaully owned when you were 17, regardless of weather or not it's "a sports car wannabe"

Suck my dick.

no I bought my own damn car at 15 you nublar, 88 fiero GT (god a miss that car)

I was meerly commenting mainly not on your choice of car but more on the stupidity of wasting money on highend tires on a gutless car I means comeon, my old fiero had as much power as that thing has and weighed half as much. the v6 edition of all pony cars are meant for show not go.

I voted bald tyres on teh back, but honestly, look into mcvickj's option 5...rent a car.

The car rental companies have problems with people under 23-25. I'm a senior in college.

I would avoid a car that potentially could strand you along the road. Spend a hundred dollars and rent a car. Be sure to pay for the extra insurance.

Nevermind me. Don't take it personally. I'm just disgruntled today. :|
