Touchpad Tap-to-Click only works without driver installed

My touchpad's tap-click feature only works properly when it's being used as a "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" (no driver installed). If I install the Dell provided drivers it becomes almost impossible to perform a tap-click. If I tap too hard or too soft no click occurs. a tap-drag is definitely out of the question. The same is true when I install the drivers from the Synaptics website. I don't think it's a hardware problem because tap-clicking and tap-dragging work just fine with no driver installed. I would continue using the touchpad without a driver, but I've grown accustomed to the features available only with a driver (scrolling, tap zones, etc). Thanks for any help.

Also, this is a fresh WinXP install on a Vostro 1000 laptop.

Have you went into the options for the touchpad? Generally there are options for how hard you need to press etc.
