touchpad scrolling doesn't work on laptop

I've got a Compaq R3000z. The touchpad has a scroll area. If you slide your finger up and down on the right hand side of the touchpad, it acts as a scroll wheel would on a mouse. After installing the drivers for an Intellimouse explorer, the scroll area on the touchpad stopped working. Even after uninstalling the Intellimouse software, the scroll area on the touchpad still won't work. I can't find anything in the settings to change it.
Any ideas?
