I would appreciate your advice on a project I’m considering undertaking.
Project Goal
1) Complete a technical project with my daughter.
2) Build a funky/art “computer” that runs a very simple custom application that requires a 7” touchscreen.
3) Potentially meet my daughters desire to “upcycle”.

Existing Materials that could meet #3:
- old Lenovo T60 laptop in decent shape
- V1 kindle fire that has a horrible battery
- a few boxes filled with old computer stuff…everything from old cases to power supplies

Design ideas:
A) Will likely build the case out of wood to support the funky/art goals. We’ve been playing around with Acrylic on other projects so we’re toyed with the idea of veneer over acrylic due to thinness/strength. But all wood might be easiest.
B) I’m leaning towards a windows based mini-itx system. We’ve coded an Android app but I could probably hack my way through a C-sharp program easier than learning android (or R-pi or Arduino). Plus I assume drivers would more likely be turn-key.
C) I’d go low heat components and leave room for a fan if my fan-less venting strategy doesn’t work.
D) Dropping the upcycle requirement probably will save time and help get the project to done.
A few areas where I’d appreciate help:
- Seems like I could go with an LVDS equipped motherboard and I’d be set with the T60 screen. Is there any value in the kindle fire screen? Should I blow the hole “upcycle” idea and just buy a new screen and touchscreen?
- It looks like I can buy a 4 wire touch screen and then connect that to a 3M USB controller. Are the controller’s standard? Will I have driver issues with Windows? Anyway to use the serial port header?
- Any thoughts on reuse of the kindle fire touchscreen (that has advantages of already having a professional bevel.
- What’s the best way to shield EMF?
- Do I have worry about grounding any components?
Any thoughts (or links to more info) would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the latest Wii and have an extra controller joystick laying around unused then you can use the controller as a touch screen device.

There are drivers to use it on a pc and the pointing device front is really a camera and you mount it like on a tripod pointing at any screen then you just need a glove or something to allow a red light tip on the pointer finger tip. Calibration is very easy and even more fun when used on a projector.

Many videos are on this subject on youtube.
