totally random question about sound chips

for my senior design project, it has become necessary for my lab partner and i to use a voice menu. this voice menu will be output on the telephone. we figured out that we could use a DAC to get the voice from the sound chip to the telephone line.

however, we have a problem in that neither of us have used a sound chip before. we are looking for a digital sound chip that is capable of holding about 4 to 8 different sound clips and then playing them as chosen (it wouldn't be sequentially played) or digital sound chips that can hold a sound sample each and play them. a model number or manufacturer name would be nice. googling "digital sound chip" gives us a lot of crap and no real answers. the clips would be from a second to 8 seconds in length... however, we can break up the longer recording into shorter recordings of a second each.

any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance!

radio shack sells an IC which does just that

allows you to hold brief sound clips and play them back

it's designed for projects and stuff like what you're doing

no idea of model number, but calling a few 'shacks might be a good start, or looking at their online catalog
