Total Newb with basic questions please:)

I am a total newb. Please help.
1. Can I build (I have some help putting it together) a gaming pc for $500.00. I have a monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers. I want to play Battlefield 2, Battlefield Vietnam etc.
2. Where should I buy my parts? Tigerdirect seems to have pretty good prices.
3. PCIe for that budget?
4. P4 vs AMD???
5. Upgradability?
6. I have an operating system. Just need hardware.

I will probably purchase/build a ($1000.00+) system within a few years, or if the $500.00 system forum members suggest is upgradable...maybe I'll simply upgrade.

Sorry for the annoying newb question, but I didn't see any other posts that suited my needs.

Oops...forgot to mention, I live in Canada so any place that you are suggesting I buy from need to ship to canada.

Thanks.

probably cant play bf2 on a 500 dollar computer, well, maybe at really low settings. tigerdirect does have good prices, but many members here have had a lot of problems with them. i dont have any personal experiences, so i will let someone else elaborate.

lol I did built a rig around 505 bucks. And it played bf2 🙂

Yep. I know I know. Means $100 worth of hardware gone if you have to buy one.

Edit:

I had to edit that Epox board away-- Newegg offered it in a combo but I didnt realise it was an agp. Had to go back to the ECS one.

Edit:

Oh, and I bought from TigerDirect once. Stick with Newegg. They are way more reputable.

Gaming and budget DO NOT go together. BF2 is a game that likes ALOT of ram (up to 2gb, 1gb min) and a beefy GPU (radeon 9600 at MIN). Gonna be uber to tough to fit it with your budget espically since the OS will cost you $100.

Your best bet is an Xbox with BF:Modern combat. GL.
