Total lockup with new pc and 6600GT

I just put together a great computer that's been running smoothly save for one small thing - every time I try to start World of Warcraft it totally locks up as soon as the login screen comes up and I have to reboot. I was able to run 3dMark03 and 3dMark05 on it and it got decent scores so I thought all was well with the video card. It ran Morrowind beautifully. The thing with WoW however reminds me of on old computer I had that did the same thing, and it was because of an Open GL problem. I have tried updating the drivers for the video card and the chipset, I've tried earlier versions of the drivers and the most current versions. I've tested the memory, scanned and defragmented the hard drive, and had a witchdoctor perform a voodoo ceremony. What gives? The specs of the computer are as follows:

AMD Athlon64 3200+
Abit AN8 motherboard w/ nForce4 chipset
1 GB RAM
160GB SATA HDD
Thermaltake 480w PSU
And last but not least - eVGA PCI-Express nVidia 6600GT 128MB
(and no, it has no connection for power unlike the AGP version)

My current computer has almost the same parts except for an Asus VIA-based mobo and an AGP 6600GT. It has always run WoW beautifully. Should I give up at this point and return the card to newegg for one that might possibly work?

Thanks for the advice, I just found this forum and am looking forward to using it often. :)

hmm

Try updating your bios. Also try disabling sound, if you can. Not sure whether just removing the sound card will work.

How are your temps? Did you run memory and cpu stability tests?

Thanks for the suggestions but no luck there. Temps are fine, cpu and memory good, etc. Disabling the sound had no effect. :(

Bios?

Reinstalling WoW would be a long shot but worth a try. Can you play other 3d games on this rig?

Did you install all the MB drivers? Are you by any chance using a Linksys router? During beta my WRT54GS caused some very weird behavior when trying to run WoW.

Also, have you tried uninstalling the game and just waiting until something better comes along? :)

I have uninstalled and reinstalled WoW no less than 5 times since starting this thing up. BIOS flash went fine. I mentioned Morrowind, it played fine on it. All the mobo drivers, yes, several versions then back to the most current for both the mobo and the video card. Uninstalling WoW??? Are you mad? I'm so addicted at this point I browse the AH in my sleep. :p

Actually, I'm building this computer for a friend and just wanted to "test drive" it first to make sure everything worked. I decided to just send the card back to newegg for a replacement, and hopefully that will solve the problem. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Well the card is on it's way back to newegg, so I'll update when I get the new one. And if all else fails I will certainly try the memory stick thing (had to do that to another computer once.) ;)

well, there is a reason nf4 mobos recommend if not require a native 24 pin supply, especially running a card with no power connector. and 18a on the 12v to boot.

its not a bad unit, i had one in my p4 rig for a while but if you're passing memtest and the next card gives the same issue....

Can you explain further what you mean by a native 24-pin power suppy? The Thermaltake has a 20-pin-to-24-pin adapter on it. Would that cause any problems like this?

Like I said, it ran Morrowind fine and got ok scores for the 3DMark tests (7896 for 03 and 3449 for 05) so I figured everything was fine until it locked up on WoW for me....

I know it has been awhile since I posted here but for the sake of anyone else with the same problem, I just wanted to post that I finally got it all resolved. After trying a replacement video card and hard drive I finally replaced the Abit AN8 motherboard with an MSI K8N Neo4. Not only did I like the layout of the motherboard - not to mention the cool slate-black look - better, but once I got everything installed BLAMMO! it ran World of Warcraft like a dream. So I'm not sure if it was ABit's configuration of the chipset or what, but something wasn't working right together. Gave me some good practice reinstalling cpu's as well. ^_^

*runs off to play WoW*
