Ya, if this is vista/7 ready out the box I may buy just to save from future problems with my current copy.

GoG usually makes sure its releases will work on newer operating systems.
The main page says it should be good to go on Vista, which means it should also work on 7.
Part of the whole service is making sure that games are actually playable, unlike something such as Steam which just lets developers release older titles without requiring updates to ensure they play nicely with newer operating systems.

Never played TA back in the day.

What's the resolution? I'm assuming it's 640x480. Also, is it possible to run it in a window (similar to SC's window mod)?

it's probably 1024, and maybe even able to 1280. everything with that game was so scalable i wouldn't be surprised if it still looks decent at higher rez.

I urge anyone with even a passing interest in RTS to buy this.

This is still the Best RTS game ever made. Starcraft has nothing on it.

I still have my original boxed copy kept safe.

Also this game fully supports up to 1920x1200 with no scaling. Unlike Starcraft, the designers actually thought forward and implemented native support for those resolutions.

Also GoG is far superior to Impulse or Steam because there is zero DRM in their releases and they patch older games to work on modern systems.

IIRC you could set any resolution your computer could run.

Finally, I've installed it, I was busy with other games.

Now, I'd like to know from some of you TA veterans around, is there any unofficial patch or add-on that I am not aware of that I should install as well before playing it? Because I do know that there's a very active community for it and that it can be modified (especially with the maximum number of units being one thing). I've played TA before, many, many years ago, but back then I never had the time to complete it nor to pay any attention to community-made content.

AFAIK the latest patch for these games ends with the letter 'c' and the GoG version is missing that letter in the version number. I'm trying to find out more.

EDIT: It looks like the c patch is unnecessary for the gog version as it was made to remove something that the GoG version doesn't have anyway. The Boneyard client was removed.

I have the original base game & Core Contingency discs. Has anybody installed these on Win 7 x64 and verified if they work fine, as-is (or with available patches)?

It lists Win XP and Vista. It does not list Win 7 as supported. Not sure if Win 7 is compatible anyway.

Just had it running in W7 x64 at 1920x1200. A tiny bit of flickering on my monitor, but it's probably just me.

EDIT: Apparently the flickering is not just me and has been a problem for a long time.

Apparently installing the base game is not a problem in Win7 x64, but installing the Core Contingency add-on is. Back in the day, I played this game almost exclusively for almost two years. Purchased for the convenience, and the Battle Tactics Add-on. My first GOG game.
Thanks OP!

The latest version should already be included.

As for mods, the current best one around is TA: Escalation. It's pretty much a quality expansion for TA, not changing many things but adding a Tier 4 Experimental Unit category, and remodeling many units to make them look better. http://taesc.tauniverse.com/

The other major one, although quite older, is my personal favorite which is UTASP. It adds 230 new units, bringing TA to a total of almost 500 units. The added units are of retail quality and it was considered the best unit pack around in its day.

Very nice, thank you very much. I'll try TA Escalation first, then I might try the other one another time, but I'll download them both.
