Toss the 1986 Sony Trinitron and get a brand new Toshiba tv? Or stick to with what I got?

I have the option of either staying with my old 1986 Sony Trintion 27 inch TV or a brand new Toshiba 24 inch TV with component inputs. The sony only has a S-video input. Is there a very noticable difference between S video and component? Also the toshiba has a 3 line comb filter.

The tv will probably be kept at least for the first year of college and will have an xbox connected to it.

Which tv would you get? Or any other suggestions for a tv at around $300.

EDIT: Also has will have a progressive scan dvd player connected to it.

Component is always going to be better especially if you have a progressive scan DVD player.

Are you serious: "What should I get: a pile of crap 18 year old TV or a brand new TV?" Seriously, people's lack of all common sense amazes me. Who would be stupid enough to pay $300 for an 18 year old TV anyway? That's retarded.

Well I already have the Sony, and what I am trying to figure out is if it should get a new one for college or just stick to the one I have.

I'd get the new TV because things, like people, should be thrown away when they get old. ;)

I'd seriously get the new television though. It is a bit smaller, but it will probably have a longer life (Though I don't know anything about the model).

Well you should really change your title, because your title basically states:

"For $300 I can get either a 1986 Sony TV or a new Toshiba 24" TV, what would you get"

You should instead say:

"For $300 should I toss my 1986 Sony TV and get a new 24" Toshiba?"

Ouch.. Your sony isn't a pile of crap.

well it might be.

Are you happy with the picture quality? How bout the sound quality? Is it too big? Do you play a lot of video games and watch movies where the extra inputs would be benificial to you?

The $300 may purchase something you would get more enjoyment out of.

BTW, if you have the money to burn, definitely go with the new 24" TV. Especially in college with people going in and out of dorms, turning on and off your TV, I would be very surprised if your old Sony lasted a month or two.

I have an old Sony television (probably 20 years old) that doesn't even have closed captioning! Or I just can't figure out how to turn it on

Just keep the Sony. Its bigger and you already have it. The picture quallity maybe a little better on the new one but it will also be 3 inches smaller. The Sony isn't going to blow up just because its in a college enviroment. If anything its probably better built then the newer crap. Seems like a huge waste of money to me.

I'd just keep the old TV. $300 is a lot of money, especially when you are in college.

Then again, I didn't even bring a TV to college....

BTW, don't forget somebody has to haul that TV to and from school ;)

yes you can just go into other people's rooms and watch theirs. that way you can meet new people and drink their beer too. a tv in your room means you'll never study in your room.

or hell, maybe your new roomate will bring one.

oh you know what i'd suggest? buy a tv tuner for your computer. i had the ATI USB TV WONDER and i'd say the quality was half-crappy at best, but it worked for me: no hauling 30 pound tv, no wasting space... and you can record stuff too!

That's what I did. I got a TV/FM tuner. I ripped all my CDs and got a DVD-ROM drive. I pretty much set out, quite successfully, to consolidate all of my electronic devices into one computer in a case the size of a VCR. I used to joke that the only thing it couldn't replace was my fridge/microwave!

But I rented those anyway, so I never had to cart them back and forth.

For $300 I sure as hell wouldn't be buying a 24" TV, that's for sure. $280 can get you a really nice 27" rebadged Samsung dynaflat (Akai) from Sam's Club.

Why waste $300 if your Sony is still going strong. With the way TV's are made today the odds are pretty good that your 1986 sony will outlive that brand new Toshiba. I'm still using a 25" Samsung from the early 90's with no plans to replace it.
