I'm looking for a non-fancy Toshiba DVD player and needs to have these features.

Plays DVDs
Plays VCDs
Single disc prefered.....smaller sized player the better
Component Out
New, not refurbished.

Post your recommendations! TIA!

Edit: Ohhh, geez....sorry

STAND ALONE DVD PLAYER. To be hooked up to a TV.

Sorry for the confusion.....my bad.

Recommend staying away from Toshiba. They are not good at supporting (S)VCD/MP3/anything other than DVD format.

Say what? I've never had any problems playing back ANY video format with my Toshiba SD-M1212 and SD-M1612 in the 3 years since I started watching DVDs on my computer, including the new SVCD format. I've never heard of anyone I know who has a Toshiba drive had this problem either. Maybe it's your choice of software players. Toshiba's have been very reliable performers for me and I heartily recommend them to anyone.

I think this thread is referring to standalone DVD players, not DVD-ROM drives.

Oh, well if that's the case, nevermind. I've never owned a Toshiba stand-alone. I have had two Panasonics and they were crap. I'm using a cheap $75 Memtek now and believe it or not, it played everything I've thrown at it from .mpg's to .avi's (including SVCD).

Yeah, Toshiba Home DVD players dont do much else than standard DVD and CD. The cheap players are pretty good with other formats. I replaced my Toshiba with a JVC XV-S300BK. Plays everything.

My Toshiba stand-alone plays VCD's (even non-standard bit rate ones) with no problem. It won't play SVCD's though. And the playback of regular DVD's is stellar. It also has progressiv-scan output. I forget the model number, if you really want to know I will look it up for you. It was $180 at Best Buy.

Hmmm...ok.

I'm going to go look, but I'll ask anyhow. What's the difference between VCD and SVCD? I have a collection of MPG's (about 650mb each, 1 hour length) that I want to burn to CD. I'm not sure of the format difference.

Thanks for info.
