Toshiba's used to be quite resilient, how do they fare overall today?

I'm interested in a notebook and have fond memories of the last Toshiba I owned. Are they worth it these days?

Why? I'm looking for a laptop and the Toshiba P25 looks impressive. Explain why they are bad, because as far I know they are top notch.

uh, I have a toshiba. i know many a person with the current toshiba models. Only 1 person out of about 20 hasn't had some kind of problem. Mine has massive heat issues, and the HD failed after 9 months.

I picked one up for my brother about 4-5 months ago and his has been fantastic. Its constantly on the road with him and his wife while they travel to different art shows and he has yet to have a single issue.

I would try to avoid the 19V models from Toshiba. They are generally desktop CPU based and their construction is usually not that good (to those of you looking at the P25, it' construction borders on overkill). The 19V models don't seem to receive as many software updates either. Of course a select few 15V models have had problems as well. Whatever model/brand you choose, try to stay away from desktop CPU based laptops as they seem to have more problems than others.

My dad had non stop problems with his Toshiba, but I don't remember the model number. I sold him my Dell i8200, and he hasn't had a problem since.

Today, Voodoo, IBM, and Dell would get my votes as the best notebooks you can get.

My dad's got a Toshiba that he uses for work. The thing runs like a dream.. If he ever had any problems with it, I'd be the first to know since he knows very little about computers.

Seems to totaly depend on the model you get. Some are great laptops but others are lemons, so shop carefully :)

Once upon a time, Thosiba was quality only. They produced some brutes still running today. But... they started to lose money and have been trying to branch out into the consumer segment.

Unless you are prepared to pay top dollar, I'd avoid Thosiba.
IBM, HP and Dell have plenty of good models at the low to medium end.

I had two Portege 3020CT's that died on me recently. They were some of the best laptops I ever saw. They were ancient but lasted forever and took so many drops, hits and other physical abuse with absolutely NO PROBLEMS.

Then I bought a successor.. the Portege 2000 a little while back. First week, I snapped a piece off the case where the lock goes in. Other than that, it has handled some of my abuse. But overall, I think it is really slow... so Toshiba dropped the ball there.

In terms of the best laptops, I guess the IBM Thinkpads would be at the top. If you don't mind Macs, their offerings are pretty impressive. At the value end, I think the eMachines are fantastic for the price. Some of the Dells are okay as well.
