I despise Compaq desktops. I haven't had much experience with Compaq laptops, but I would assume that Toshiba is better.

"I despise Compaq desktops."

I agree with that statement, but I wasn't sure if the laptops were any better.

Assuming you're comparing the S103 and 906US at Best Buy, the Compaq is better. Toshiba may be better for the higher-end laptop models but for a budget notebook the 906US has better specs. I believe it's $250 more but you get a faster CPU, DDR RAM, faster FSB, and CD-RW. Plus it comes with a $50 rebate for a USB floppy (pay only shipping AR) whereas the Toshiba doesn't come with one.

Budget components are always nice, but quality can't be sacrificed for slightly faster configurations. Now, as I said, I don't know if Compaq's laptops are like their desktops. I am just assuming this is the way it is; correct me if I'm wrong.

All the internals in the Compaq seem good to me, I've only had the 906US for a week but so far it's running fine. Personally I think the distinction between expensive and budget notebooks is overrated. The Thinkpad T21 I've also used has a better keyboard and is about 1 1/2 lbs. lighter but that's about it. No one will ever convince me to buy another POS Thinkpad again, no matter how good the customer reviews have been. My experience with it and IBM's repair service has been a nightmare (with still 2 more years of warranty left).
