I am in the market to buy a new laptop... And I want to be able to play games occasionally... I searched the net to find this Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop and it looks nice but I found no one here using/talking about it ...

I am willing to spend about $2500.00 CAN ( $1700.00 US )

For the price, I think it's the best for me
- Pentium-M 1.4
- 256 (i'll add a 512 stick within 2 months)
- 40Go 5400 RPM hd
- Radeon 9000 w/ 32 RAM

Do you have other suggestions ? Dont forget I'm using CAN $ ...

Is there any reseller in the US with good deals that will ship here ?

Hey Max,

I'm on the same boat, looking to buy a laptop for the upcoming school year. Seems like the S1 really hasnt hit the US mainstream although it's just as good, if not better, than the IBM T40

Even beat the T40 in Computer World's test http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,111115,00.asp

Considering either the Tecra S1 (which looks much cheaper for Canucks than it is priced down in the States for equivalent models....which is a first!).....the Acer Travelmate 800 (http://www.acer.ca/APP/AKC/INTERNET...C5489602250AFEF788256CDE00769BC5?OpenDocument) or the T40p.

I think I might go with the Tecra S1....bigger screen, longer battery life, better graphics card....only issue is that it weighs a few lb more than the T40....but I think it's worth it.

wow... thank you for the link...

I also think i'll go with this S1 because it's $500-600 cheaper than the T40 for more like 15", CDRW+DVD, etc...

And IMHO Toshiba makes great laptop...

I see on the web site that one can get a UXGA screen for $150.00 more but I didn't found anything on Toshiba Canada's web site...

I still hesitate between the 103JL and the 11Q4L ... The only difference being a 1.4 or 1.4 Pentium-M ... I dont know if it worth the extra $250-300

Give me news of your choice...

Better than a Dell, but I would still prefer the IBM T40.

czarkazm, bigger screen is pratically useless (unless you have bad eyes) if the resolution is not higher. Personally, I think XGA (1024x768) belongs on a 14" and not a 15", which should use SXGA+ (1400x1050). But this is only my opinion, some people think that XGA is too little for a 14" and prefer SXGA+ on that. Best thing to do is to check out the different laptops in a shop.

Better graphics card, AFAIK a 32mb R7500 should score around 4000 points in 3dmark01, this is only 1000 less than the 32mb R9000. I would not put too much into this.

But Toshiba do make good laptops. We had Satelittes at my previous work place, and they had no problems despite being used in cars all the time.

The TravelMate TM802LCi looks great...

Is has this than the Tosh dont have
- UXGA 15"
- 64Mo instead of 32Mo
- S-Video out...

But I can't infd it anywhere.. Neither on IngramMicro (Reseller) or on NCIX (Online Store that has TravelMate serie)

Did you found it anywhere in Canada ?

And does TravelMate are good ??

If I get the Tecra, I'll probably get the 103JL

Acer has a $150 mail in rebate offer for the Travelmate 800 which was valid till July 31st.....

check out this laptop:

http://www.notebookdepot.com/product.asp?productid=24&categoryid=1

Woulda been $2500 w/ the mail in rebate....almost identical specs w/ the 103JL, except 1.3Pentium M speed, the ATI 9000 graphics card w/ 64MB vs 32MB on the Tecra, and a better display....

Gonna call Acer up to see if they will have a rebate offer for August....if they do, I might take this one instead.

Also, I'm trying to find an IBM Canada employee.....I know there's a sweet deal on a Centrino 1.5 T40 for $2499CDN for employees....and that blows these other two away since it retails for about $3300CDN to the public

The IBM special for employees is really nice ...

About the review on Cnet, it's the 803 which is a little bit too much $ for me ;)

Do you think there is a big performances increase between 32 and 64Mo Radeon 9000 ?

The tecra is great there are just a few slight problems in my eyes, not a 64mb video card option and I believe it does not have a firewire port or smart card reader. And no gigbit ethernet. I was led right back to the D800. I am simply waiting for one to two price drops, any misc upgrades and fixes, and most importantly the MONEY ;) to purchase it.
