Toshiba Tecra 500CDT

I acquired this laptop just for a internet appliance when I travel, just use dialup so do not need much.
1. I installed 98se on it and the modem test says it is a 33.6 modem when it is supposed to be 56, wrong driver maybe?
2. I would like to run it without the battery can this be done? I cannot figure out how to get the bat out.
3. How do I get into the BIOS on this thing? I have tried f1 f2 and delete when booting.
4. There is a lever on the left side(looking from the keyboard) towrd the rear that pops out but cannot figure out what it is for
5. I really would like to get a manual for this thing but have been unable to find one searching on google, anyone have one they would share with me? I will pay the copy fees and any other monies that it would take to get one
I would like very much to be able to leave the bat out as it weighs a ton.

I found an online copy of the manual for my toshiba laptop at www.toshiba.com,
go to:
products + services,
notebook pc's,
home/home office,
services and support,
download center - enter Portables/Tecra/500CDT.
Filter by "User Guide/Addenda" and you should be able to download the Online User's guide for the Tecra 500-series.
