How do they work for DAE (digital audio extraction)?

Are they noisy? (tired of those 50x cheapies that sound like a jet engine)

Man! I'm ITCHING to get a DVD drive. But I have this wacky idea, can anyone confirm/deny this?...

I've got a home theatre system, including the Receiver. The receiver has multiple video/audio outs. What if I were to purchase an A/V capture card for my PC? I could run the outs from the receiver to the ins on the A/V Capture and go to town...Right? Since the receiver already does the work to decode everything?

thanks.

This Drive is locked. And that would work, I would imagine, but you wouldn't be able to run any DVD programs, besides, why would you want to watch a DVD on your monitor when you can watch it on a TV already, with a nicer sound system (I am guessing)?

As a follow-up question. Can anyone explain why you need a region free DVD if you live in the North America or Japan? I thought that we were released to first followed by other countries.
Thanx

Dvd discs are divided into different regions. For instance, US DVDs are recorded for use with DVD players that can play region 1. If you are in UK and decide to get a DVD movie while you're here in the states and try to play it on a "non region free" dvd player, it will not play the movie. Vice versa if you device to buy a Hong Kong dvd movie encoded in their regional coding. Region Free basically means that you can play any dvd's from anywhere in the world.

Dvd movies are encoded by region. Each movies sold in a specific market (North America, Europe, Asia, etc.) can only be played on players sold in that market. I region free player can play movies from any of the regions.
In reality it is a moot point if you don't plan on trying to import movies. Unless you want to make a statement of principles against region coding considering it is an unfair restraint of trade introduced by the Movie Picture Industry.

Yes typically, movies are released first in the US, however some movies are never released in the US, or at least they will never be released on DVD here. If you like Hong Kong Action flicks (as an example), you may never be able to watch them in DVD, cuz very few will be released in the US.

Big Dog: you don't. Most dvds (almost all) out there have versions of region 1 coding. And since the rest of the world have easy access to region free coding, nobody really cares abotu coding their dvds in their own regional coding. In fact there are dvds out there that have no region coding on there. However, some region free coding also have macrovision disabled. I'm not sure how much of this applies to dvd-rom players....as majority of this material is from A/V DVD players.

Scyber: I haven't seen any Asian Region HK movies on the market at all. I thought that most of the companies released a US region coding for their movies.

Most have and most are, but I heard that the Movie Industry is pushing to have more region coding done now that DvD players are becoming more prolific. I just used that as an example for bigdog, not necesarily as fact.
