I have this DVD drive and use ATI DVD software and or PowerDVD. With DMA checked, the ATI software sometimes have problem playing DVD movies, more so with certain DVDs. The powerDVD always has the problem. The payback would pause for 2-5 second from time to time.

With the DMA unchecked, both sofware paly fine. Is not a big problem, but I would like to know if anyone has the same problem.

BTW, I upgrade from a VIA motherboard to a BX6 r2 without reinstalling Win98.

I used to have that problem with my pioneer 10x and thought it was the drive (I was benchmarking with DVDspeed99). With dma on the drive was slower than with it off! In the meantime I got a Toshiba 12x, and I see the same thing. So it can only be the MB. I am using a k7m, with via ide controller... I am now waiting for my k7v that should arrive sometime this week and should take care of this 'problem'. I just ran the drive without dma... no real problem for me!

heh how come soo many people have a problem with this? did you guys install your Via IDE drivers?

I don't even understand why Windows has this DMA checkbox. the BIOS already know's that it's ATA33 or ATA66 or even ATA100. isn't that enough? or is DMA not enabled because not all IDE devices are capable of DMA, even though they are ATA33 or higher?

Yes I know DMA is a method of getting data to/from the memory.

I am using a Abit BX6 r2 now with the drive. BIOS sees it as UDMA33, so maybe there is no need to check it. I will just leave it uncheck. not really a problem for me either.
